Holiday Party - Human Rights Day

Today, I want to talk about international Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10. This date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on December 10, 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global enunciation of human rights.

This Declaration covers a wide range of political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights. Even though it is technically not a binding document, it inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which constitute an international standard of human rights. Today, the general consent of all United Nations Member States on the basic human rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even stronger and emphasizes the relevance of human rights. The Declaration is now the most translated document in the world except for the Bible.

This is one of the most widely celebrated days internationally and it is on this day that the five-yearly United Nations Prizes in the Field of Human Rights and the Nobel Peace Prizes are traditionally awarded. The theme for 2015 is "Our Rights, Our Freedoms, Always.” - Information courtesy of sources found via Wikipedia
