Musing Mediterranean Book Blast

Blurb:
A trip to the Mediterranean—who wouldn’t be thrilled? Beth Daigle should be doing back flips as she prepares to escape her humdrum suburban life, but travel anxiety gets the best of her. This is a trip of a lifetime, something to look forward to, yet Beth is dreading it.

The daughter of an Italian mother and Greek father, Beth has always dreamed of visiting Greece and Italy. Her Type A husband, Tony, revels in planning every detail of their two-week vacation. The plan expands to include not only Beth and Tony’s two tween daughters, but Beth’s parents, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew.

As her family’s excitement mounts, so does Beth’s trepidation. She experiences serious anxiety about the flight itself, plus spending two solid weeks with her extended family.

Despite her worries, Beth manages the eight-hour plane ride to Rome, and the adventure begins.

If you’ve never experienced the beauty of the Mediterranean, or even if you have, Musing Mediterranean will take you there through Beth’s eyes, page by page.

Excerpt:
ROME

Our first tour of Rome took us on a romp through the city on a guided golf cart tour. That’s right, I said golf cart.

At one point along the tour, I was positioned on the back seat of the cart facing oncoming traffic. This didn’t faze me, as I don’t experience motion sickness.

Hanging off the back of our cart, I held on for dear life as we attempted to keep pace with traffic and simultaneously not lose our caravan. It wasn’t until I was faced with one particularly anxious bus driver that I began to worry that we might not end our excursion with the same number of people as we began. As traffic slowed and my cart came to a near stop, the bus pulled up behind me so closely and so quickly I could’ve leaned over and kissed it.

As the bus approached, I didn’t know what else to do other than to squeal in horror and cover my eyes—I was sure I was about to meet my fate. It all happened so quickly that I froze, unable to think of a better way to save myself and others on board.

“What is going on back there—why are you screaming?” Tony shouted.

“I’m about to be flattened by a bus!”

When Tony looked back to see how close the bus really had come, all he could say was, “Holy crap!”

About the Author:
Beth Daigle is a lifelong New Englander residing north of Boston with her husband and daughters. Prior to settling into her role as a writer, Beth was a marketing professional whose favorite part of the job was writing. As a freelancer, Beth has enjoyed contributing to numerous lifestyle and home publications, yet she yearned for something more than a magazine article. Then along came Musing Mediterranean. Beth quickly became immersed in chronicling this travel event and articulating her perceptions of the places she visited, the people she met, the foods she enjoyed and the crazy moments she encountered. The idea that someone who may never travel to Greece, Italy or Turkey could appreciate this experience through Beth’s eyes became a driving force behind the story. Revealing her struggle with travel anxiety helped Beth move forward and embrace, once again, how very wonderful it is to travel the world.

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” St. Augustine.

Beth is a creative soul who finds joy in art, home design, gardening, reading, writing, a good laugh, and an even better television show.

Another Five Minutes Book Blast

Blurb:
Loving him is easy.

Fearing him is necessary.

Trusting him could be a deadly mistake.

Born deaf and living with an anxiety disorder, Brooke Hartley manages life in five-minute intervals. It’s all she can do to get out of bed each morning. She’s hidden inside her sister’s apartment for over a year.

Everything changes when Brooke’s sister goes missing. Her fragile world crashes. She is desperate to find her, and she’ll need help.

Haunted by a past he needs to forget, Scott Derrico keeps to himself until his gallery manager, Autumn Hartley, suddenly disappears. He is forced out of his isolation to help a woman that needs him with a terrifying intensity.

Scott tries to deny his attraction to Brooke. He doesn’t want to get emotionally involved but he craves her like nothing else. And, for her, he is a dark and sexy diversion to overcome her fear.

With a genuinely flawed and relatable heroine and a mysterious and protective hero, you won’t want this love story to end. You’ll beg…for another five minutes…

Excerpt:

Scott stopped so he could stare at Autumn’s sister. He’d forgotten—again—that she was coming. Maybe if he’d remembered, he would have been more prepared.

Brooke was absolutely beautiful.

Her eyes met his, and he couldn’t look away. Those large, gorgeous eyes held him in place better than steel bars could have. He could stare at those eyes for the rest of the day, or week, or longer.

He suddenly remembered his manners. He’d told Autumn he would make this easier for her. He forced a polite smile, completely aware his behavior was not going unnoticed.

With a pointed stare, Autumn stepped toward him. “What’s wrong? And don’t answer where she can see you. She reads lips.”

He turned sideways, away from Brooke, opened his mouth to respond, and shrugged instead.

“Did you change your mind about her working here?”

“No, of course not.”

“Okay. So why are you looking at her like that?”

Again, he shrugged. What was he supposed to say? Sorry, but I don’t want to have the hots for your sister. You should have told me she was so beautiful.

“Oh,” she said, her eyebrows lifting.

Oh? What the heck did she mean by that?

“You realize I have a picture of my sister on my desk, right? It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that she’s pretty.”

He hadn’t noticed the picture. Obviously. And, she was way more than pretty.

Her look of surprise suddenly changed. “Scott, don’t you dare make a move on my sister. I mean it. That’s the last thing she needs right now.”

“That won’t happen.”

“Good. Now, please turn back around and say hello. I want her to feel welcome.”

Right. He turned back, shoved his hair away from his face, and instantly went right on staring. “Hey. Welcome to the team.”

Was that his voice? It was much softer than normal. He had to snap out of this.

She gave such a small smile that he wondered if he imagined it.

Had she understood what he’d said? Maybe he hadn’t spoken slowly enough?

He looked back to Autumn to make sure she wasn’t still glaring at him. She was. Oh hell. He walked away to his studio. This day was not going to get any easier.

Z-BOT Review Tour

Blurb:
Chris Johnson never really started living until he died. Orphaned, fostered, and drifting through life, the twenty-seven year old programmer had no family, little money, and few friends. But he also had no enemies. So, who the hell killed him? After an experimental process brings him back from the dead as a zombiebot, he gets the chance to find out.

Heather Logan’s latest process uses nanobots to reanimate a corpse. Half robot, half something raised from the dead, Chris is her first successful resuscitation. Questions abound. What is it? Is it truly alive, a machine, or some kind of zombie-hybrid?

But someone wants to steal Heather’s secret process and put her out of the picture permanently. Chris, with his new superpowers, is the only thing standing between Heather and an assassin’s bullet. Is he enough of a hero to save her?

Excerpt:
Chris’s curiosity piqued. Seriously, computer-controlling-me, you don’t even want to acknowledge her? How rude.

“Is it working? Is he mobile? God, this is so exciting.”

Okay, a little over-the-top bubbly for his tastes, but she did seem nice.

Heather extended her hand flat out toward Chris. “See for yourself.”

“This is it?” Amber’s tone ratcheted up an octave. “Oh my God, Heather, he’s gorgeous!”

Heather’s eyes were dancing. “Amber Harris, meet Christopher Johnson.”

Chris Johnson. He really hated being called Christopher.

“Oh. Oh wow. How do you do?”

His head swung toward the newcomer now. “I am in proper working order.”

Real smooth, dumbass.

Amber’s auburn tresses framed an attractive, pleasant face with big green eyes. Her just-slightly-too-big mouth spread in a broad grin.

She held out her hand toward him.

Chris’s gaze went down to the offered hand. Take it, dummy. That slight tingle on the left side of his head again. His right hand placed the spoon it held on the table and took her hand, offering a single shake before letting go.

Amber placed the palm of her hand against his cheek. “He’s so warm, so life-like.”

Heather chuckled. “With the exception of brain function, he is technically alive again. And even there, the EEG picked up an anomaly. Actual brain wave activity.”

Amber’s big eyes widened even farther. “You think a part of him might still be in there?”

“It’s something I need to check out once the computer has fully integrated with the brain. That could take a few days. We may have to delay Phase Two.”

My Review:
4.5 stars

When I started this book, I had no idea what to expect. The book sounded unique and weird (hello, zombiebot?) and I thought I’d either love it or hate it. Suffice to say, I loved it.

The characters were amazing. It would have been very easy to overplay the mad scientist role or tormented zombie, but Heather and Chris were both well-rounded and fun characters. Heather’s sense of humor alone cracked me up (literally a page after I thought she was basically Dr. Frankenstein, she made a similar joke), and Chris’s internal monologue while struggling to regain control of his new body/existence was hysterical. Plus, their chemistry was off the charts!

I also enjoyed the plot and the sci-fi elements. The nanobots and the process behind creating a z-bot were thought out and made sense, rather than just being a magical plot hole fixer tool. And I enjoyed the mystery and action behind figuring out what was going on and who was out to get them.

All in all, this book offers a wacky premise and delivers on it. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a little something different.

The Villainous Viscount or the Curse of the Venn's Review Tour

Blurb:
An appreciative satire of the clichés of classical Gothic, with the eponymous Villainous Viscount, a haunted castle, a family curse, and a spirited heroine.

When Clarissa Greendale inherits the fortune of disreputable uncle she hardly knows, she does not expect to find herself forced into marriage with an aristocratic fortune hunter and wild, brawling, debauched social outcast. Not only that, but her name featured some way down on the list of eligible heiresses he planned to court. Still, Clarinda has always found Harley Venn set off the most unmaidenly tinglings in her; that is one consolation...

Yet neither did Clarinda expect to inherit the legacy of a wrongdoing from half a century before. For the wicked if beguiling Lord Venn seems to have inherited a family curse, which, having dispatched the main perpetrators of the old crime, now moves on to their heirs, who are just as wild a set of rakes as their elders. There are rumours of violent deaths preceded by appearances from an inexorable hooded spectre, of inexplicable strikes of lightning, and of haunted mirrors.

The light-hearted Harley Venn dismisses all these as conjuring tricks. He even hires a drunken charlatan of a professional magician to prove it.

Clarinda is far from sure that there is any rational explanation. Still, it would take more than an enforced marriage to an incorrigible pugilistic libertine or persecution from malevolent spectres to damage her steely nerves and sense of the ridiculous.

This lively Gothic comedy, written as a good natured satire of the clichés of classical Gothic, gives the reader a warm-hearted and courageous heroine, a rascally but beguiling anti-hero and an authentic historical background to the delightfully over-the-top adventures, a cast of wholly believable characters, an engaging love story and many chills on its way to its tumultuous conclusion.

Excerpt:
‘He tried his beguiling smile again, an expert blend of mischief and underlying sorrow. “You underestimate the influence you could have on me. Bad as I am, and young as you are, I know that you could be my saving angel.”

“No, Sir. But I am happy to hear of your intention to change your way of life, and I wish you all happiness with the young lady who does feel herself equal to the role you honour me by offering.”

She could sense that he was dizzy with humiliation, but refused to let her fortune slip though his fingers so easily. Now, he called on another quality necessary for a pugilist – self-control. Rising from his knees, he took her hands before she could retreat, caressing them. “Clarinda, you remember that you were the only respectable young lady who spoke kindly about poor Foyle’s death. You were not cold and implacable, then.”

Her lips thinned. “I am only so now in refusing your offer of marriage.”

He dropped her hands. “So be it, Ma’am.” Too outraged to make the normal civilities, he turned away.

A blinding flash of lightning outlined the window, where a hooded, cloaked figure stood seemingly suspended on the air. It extended one skeletal hand as if reaching towards them and vanished even as the thunderclap came.

Swearing, Harley Venn dashed to the window. As the peal of thunder died away, Clarinda came up behind him. “We saw that oddity before.” She gazed about the empty street below. “This time it has appeared at a first floor window. That is extraordinary.”’

Author Bio and Links:
Lucinda Elliot has recently become the proud honouree of the B.R.A.G medallion for outstanding fiction for her Gothic historical paranormal romance, 'That Scoundrel Emile Dubois' - (available from amazon both in print and on Kindle for the very low price of 0.99 plus VAT, as the author writes to share her stories, not to make a profit).

She was born in England and loves writing Gothic stories - as she grew up living in a series of isolated rambling period houses, in Buckinghamshire, Devonshire and North Wales among other places that would make perfect settings for such stories, that may not be surprising.

After that she lived and worked in London for many years, and now lives in mid Wales with her family, and has greatly improved her Welsh, but there is some way to go.

She loves working out and weight training, and was once a Sportsfighter (long since retired). She likes body sculpting, too. She shows a geeky streak in her interests such as classic novels, history and environmental matters.

She loves creating strong female characters to provide an effective counterpoint to the gung-ho males. She can't resist putting humour into all of her writing, dark or otherwise.

Her latest novel 'The Villainous Viscount Or The Curse of the Venns', another historical Gothic with undercurrents of dark humour, came out in August 2016.

At present she is working on a sequel for 'That Scoundrel Emile Dubois'.

When reading 'That Scoundrel Emile Dubois' the author hopes the reader will laugh out loud as well as shudder at Sophie's Gothic horrors as she becomes trapped in a great house staffed by the wicked Emile's band of brigands.

When reading 'Ravensdale' she hopes to give the reader a laugh and a journey through an over-the-top romantic highwayman (and highwaywoman) adventure that sends up the tropes of traditional historical romance.

'Aleks Sager's Daemon', a fantasy novel revolving around an author obsessed by the life of the tragic Russian author Alexander Pushkin, is darker, but she hopes the reader has to smile at parts, for all that.

In 'The Villainous Viscount' the author provides some more Gothic tropes she has always enjoyed - a haunted castle with secret passages, a family curse, and a vengeful spectre. Add to this the wicked but beguiling young pugilistic Viscount, the plain but sensuous bride he has married to get his wandering hands on her fortune, and a vivid cast of secondary characters, and the usual comedy and the reader is in for a lively read.

Authors always have worked out far more about their characters than they can possibly show in a book, even a longish one - not to mention all that clutter in their heads gleaned from historical research, etc. Lucinda Elliot's blog fills in these sorts of details about her characters.

Lucinda Elliot hopes you will visit her blog if you would like to find out more about her books, the characters themselves, her other writing, her literary criticism, and reviews of both traditionally published and self-published novels.

Hong Kong Central Review Tour

Blurb:
Despite the fact that she quit the CIA, Lee Carruthers is in Hong Kong doing a little job for Sidney Worthington. He’s thinks something is wrong at Wong’s Antiques. Lee finds Henry Wong—just as he’s being kidnapped by the Chau Fong Triad. What does a Triad want with an antiquities dealer? That’s one of many questions, as Lee reunites with an old lover, is caught in the middle of burgeoning democracy demonstrations, and uncovers secrets that may once again upend her life.

NOTE: The book will be on sale for only $0.99 during the tour.

Excerpt:
Hong Kong never sleeps. It was almost midnight, and the traffic was heavy, the neon signs flashing on and off, but Upper Lascar Row was quiet, the tables of tourist junk pulled inside the shops for the night. I walked softly in the shadows on the right side of the cobblestone street, looking for Wong Antiques among the red-lacquered shop fronts with signs in Chinese and English picked out in gold. The hairs on the back of my neck were prickling as if someone were watching me, and I jumped when a cat crossed the road. How could anybody be following me? I only got to Hong Kong three hours ago.

In the dim light, I saw Wong Antiques halfway up the block on the left-hand side. The only light showing was in the back, a nightlight or an office. I had crossed the street to the shop and had rung the bell once when I heard footsteps coming up the street. I slipped back across the street and melted into the doorway of a shop. Someone turned the light on in the antique shop, and a thin man wearing a blue scholar’s robe walked to the door. Henry Wong? The footsteps I heard materialized as two large men in suits. They banged on the door, and the man backed up. They banged on the door again, and he opened it unwillingly. The men were Chinese, bulky in the way a fighter is bulky, probably showing tattoos under their white shirts.

My Review:
4.5 stars

Note: Though this is book 3 of a series, it works as a standalone.

Beautiful location, fascinating characters, a non-stop thriller storyline, well-written…this book has it all. It’s a non-stop adventure from beginning to end, with plenty of humor and detailed Hong Kong descriptions to boot. My favorite part is Lee herself. Her take-no-prisoners-or-crap attitude, her resourcefulness, and her overall badassery makes for a wonderful and engaging heroine. All in all, this was a great story, and while it’s my first Lee Carruthers thriller, it won’t be my last.

Cross Drop Review Tour

Blurb:
Nikki

I’m not a saint. Never claimed to be. I’ve played the game and scored my fair share—both on and off the field. This is why I should have known better than to fall for a hockey player. But I did. I fell fast and hard.

Now I’m left with the painful consequences, reminded every day of how reckless I had been by giving him my heart so easily—so willingly. Dalt broke me in the cruelest of ways, and because of him I’ll never be able to love again.

Dalt

Nikki changed me. She made me want to be a better man. My days playing off the field were over because she owned every little piece of my heart…until she left, leaving behind a gnawing ache where my heart used to be.

Now she’s back, and it’s painfully clear she hates me, ignoring me, pretending like I’m nobody to her. But that’s just too damn bad. I want answers. I want a goddamn explanation.

And most of all…I want her.

Excerpt:
“Hey.” The intelligent greeting the only thing I could think of to say.
When she looked up and hit me with those baby blues I had to remind myself to breathe.

“Hey.” One word. That was it and she started walking off the field toward the field house. I stood baffled for a moment. I’d never had a problem talking to a girl before and they usually didn’t walk away from me when I did. I ran to catch up to her.

“Great game. You were amazing out there.”

“Yeah, thanks.” She just kept walking, even picked up the pace like she was trying to get away from me.

“I’m…I’m Dalt by the way.” Like an idiot I stuck my hand out to shake hers. She stopped and stared at my outstretched hand but didn’t make a move because her hands were full with her bag and some of the equipment.

“I know who you are, hockey boy.” The words ‘hockey boy’ came out like they
tasted sour on her tongue. And she started walking away from me again. I couldn’t believe it. When I caught up to her, she stopped and turned to me.

“What do you want, hockey boy?” She threw me off my game so bad, I think I stuttered.

“I…um…your name would be nice for starters.”

“For starters?” She quirked a brow.

“Then I thought you might like to get a beer or a burger or something at the Thirsty Whale.” She scanned my body from head to toe and back up. Then the damnedest thing happened.

“No thanks. I don’t do dates. Not looking for a boyfriend. I just like to, you know, keep my options open.” Say what, now! Had she just turned me down for a date?

My Review:
3 stars

To start off, I’m not a big sports person at all, so I was more interested in the romance here than the sports, which was a big part of the book, which partially affects my review. Just an FYI before we get started.

Now then…the beginning started off shaky, with the characters coming across as shallow and over-the-top about how amazing the other was. Once the drama kicked in though, the story picked up and hit its stride. Seeing the characters grow due to their circumstances was nice. My favorite part was the humor in the writing and character interactions, which bumped this up to a solid 3 for me.

While I enjoyed the story, I did have some issues with it. The miscommunication behind their breakup was flimsy at best, so I felt a little cheated on that storyline. In addition, I was a little irritated with Dalt’s reactions, particularly to Nikki’s secret, especially since I felt he was partially to blame. Yes, she should have told you, but she had her reasons, and you never bothered to check in with her. So, I was a little irritated with how that was handled and Dalt in general.

All in all, this was an okay read for me, though I would recommend it to sports romance readers.

My Wonderful Wobbly Life VBT

Blurb:
Having survived quite a few birthdays and had some interesting experiences, I wrote them down. That's how "My Wonderful Wobbly Life" was conceived. It was nearly born in 2004, but decided to hang on until 2018 to become 'Born again.' Alleluia!!!!

Excerpt:
Chapter 1 - SURVIVAL

“I’ve changed my mind! I’ve changed my mind! I don’t want to go.”

I have a vague memory of making this cry from a railway carriage as I was stolen from my parents by authoritarians.

I was five years old when the authorities decreed I had to be placed in a home for children. Their decision was final and all avenues of appeal against it were exhausted when my father, to soften the blow of parting, talked me into what he described as an adventure.

It was not until the train began to move and the realisation came I was leaving my parents forever, that I made my plaintive cry:

“I’ve changed my mind!”

When I arrived at the home my world changed, never to be the same again. My loving mother and my fun-filled father were gone and in their place were grown-ups I did not know. I did not understand what was going on. There were lots of crippled children, but why was I there with them? Okay, I couldn’t walk very far without falling over. I shook uncontrollably most of the time for no apparent reason. I couldn’t speak very clearly. But, I’d been like this all my life, for me it was normal. So, what was I doing here? “

Have you ever had an imaginary friend?
Yes.

Do you have any phobias?
No.

Do you listen to music when you're writing?
Only if there is some coming from somewhere within my hearing.

Do you ever read your stories out loud?
No, because I don’t have any written stories to read out loud.

Tell us about your main character and who inspired him/her.
My book is an autobiography.  Therefore, the main character is ME.  The inspiration for my way of life came from many people.  Some well-known generally, but unknown personally, like Winston Churchill, Grandma Moses, Colonel Sanders, Dale Carnegie and Harry Edwards.  There are also others unknown generally, but well-known personally, my family, neighbours, friends from Church and Scout groups, school including trade teachers together with business mentors.
