Exclusive Excerpt:

At daybreak, we searched for hours and Shi still hadn’t turned up. I had no choice but to believe she’d been taken hostage or worse. I’d made several attempts since yesterday to talk to her through my mind. She never responded. Bryan had already reported this morning through the communications room. Father had told him some BS about us being out and about. He would soon find out the truth. I couldn’t imagine what would happen when he did.

Nile, Kadeem, and a few others fidgeted in one of our largest living areas. Nile paced back and forth. “Syira, you should explain the situation to Bryan.”

I glared at him. “Me! Are you nuts? You’re the one who was supposed to keep an eye on her. You gloated about watching over us until Bryan got back.”

“Don’t remind me. I feel bad enough as it is. I never thought she would take off without following protocol.”

“Yeah, that’s not like her.”

“I’m to blame,” Cessar stated.

“No one is to blame,” Kadeem insisted. “Shiray went to aid Kadanans in need of help. I’m sure it didn’t cross her mind she’d be ambushed. It was a bad call. All we can do now is stick together and focus on getting her back.”

Kadeem’s statement refocused the group. He was right. Nile gave him a small smile and nod. Maybe he’d finally won my little brother over. Nile flinched. “They’re coming down the hall. I can read Bryan’s mind. He’s anxious and wants to see Shiray.”

Oh, freaking fantastic!

“Please, Syira, I can’t tell him.”

I cringed inwardly. “All right, fine. But you owe me.”

A few seconds later my father, Bryan, Kumar, and John walked inside. Nazar filed in last and closed the doors.

“Hi, Bryan,” I squeaked. His emerald eyes frantically searched the room.

“Hey, Syira,” he replied. “Father said we needed to talk. I’m curious about what I missed. But I would like to speak with my wife first. Where is she?”

Ugh! This was going downhill fast. “Um … Shiray’s not here,” I finally got out. I bit my lip.

“Well…where is she?”

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. Father said, “Bryan, why don’t you sit down.”

Bryan’s eyes blazed a darker green. His back stiffened and he crossed his arms. Nile inched toward the door. “I don’t wanna sit. I want to know what’s going on.”

“Shiray is missing,” Father cut to the chase. “She went on a rescue mission yesterday and they were attacked by Polar ships.”

Oh, Hail Sonar, my father took over. “Missing? Waylaid? What the hell!” Bryan stormed over to our father.
