Wellness Wednesday - Briskbars Vegan Energy Bars

For this week’s Wellness Wednesday, I wanted to share something new. I have a very busy life, and one of the things I struggle with the most is keeping my energy up, especially when I’m having a hectic day. I’ve tried energy drinks, but decided I wanted to find something healthier. Enter Briskbars vegan energy bars. These sounded like the answer, plus they had some awesome reviews. I still think these are a good idea for people who like energy bars or drinks but are looking for something healthier, but turns out they weren’t to my liking.

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted to like these bars. Not only do they have just 4g of sugar, they're also vegan, GMO free, gluten free, kosher, and dairy free, not to mention a great source of protein. Plus they contained dark chocolate and coconut, two of my favorite flavors. These sounded like a much better option than energy drinks or even other energy bars on the market.

Alas, the taste sunk these for me. I couldn't stand the taste. I can't even describe what this tasted like to me except to say it is something I would never want to put into my body. Maybe it's the guarana, I don't know. And yes, I knew that these weren't supposed to be as sweet as other energy bars, but there's not enough sugar in the world to make these taste better for me. I could barely taste the chocolate, which is the only thing that made these even slightly palatable for me.

Even with the taste, I ate an entire bar because I wanted to see if I would at least get the energy (or the focus and clarity others have apparently reported feeling) promised. I did have a bit more energy and feel a bit more focused after eating the bar, so it did work on that level (which is why this is a 2 star instead of a 1 star review). This benefit is not worth putting up with the taste though, so I'll be giving my remaining bars off to someone who might actually like them because these just weren't for me.

Wellness Wednesday - Blackhead Extractor Set Review

Blackhead extractors are used to remove deep, superficial blackheads and whiteheads. They are commonly used by dermatologists or during facials because it can remove blackheads and whiteheads without causing damage to your skin (versus picking at or popping them with your fingernails). Now while I don’t have severe acne anymore, I do still deal with occasional blackheads, which is why I was glad that I was able to review this blackhead removal kit from Complete Skin Solutions.

Blackhead removal kit comes with a double loop extractor, cup and extractor, comedone extractor needle for removing blackheads, pimples, and blemishes.

Easy to use and designed comedone extractor tools have optimal balance, comfort and performance for your skin.

My Review:
4 stars

This didn’t come with instructions on how to use it, which would have been nice and helpful, especially since I hadn’t used an extractor on my blackheads before this. However, I found that once I looked up directions online, these were easy enough to use. The cup extractor in particular was great for using on sensitive areas such as around my nose, as it hurt less than the loop. I didn’t end up needing to use the lancet either when I used the cup extractor on my blackheads, which I liked as well. I also like that these came in an easy to open and close case. However, I wish that the case was fully closeable, as this case didn’t fully protect the instruments, so I didn’t feel safe using them on my face until I had sterilized them first.

Changes for 2016

I hope y'all had a great New Year's Day. I'm making several resolutions this year, which I will talk about more tomorrow. When I started blogging, I didn't know if people would like my idea of wanting to review anything and everything that interested me, yet I still gave it a try. And now here we are, 4 years later. Y'all have stuck with me through thick and thin, and I appreciate that.

There have been a lot of changes over the past 4 years, some good and some not so good. I've gotten to expand my original focuses and I've tried new things, which I am glad I got the opportunity to do. That being said, I have decided to make some more changes here on the blog in order to go back towards my original idea: sharing anything and everything; in other words, sharing links and wisdom.

First, I'm stopping the weekly Throwback Thursday posts. I've found that most of the reviews I've written that I want to share with y'all have already been posted here, making throwback posts redundant. If I do a Throwback Thursday post, it'll be for a special occasion or holiday, rather than a weekly meme. Plus, I want to focus my attention on reviewing new material, which is also part of my New Year's resolutions.

As for my second weekly meme, Wellness Wednesday, I am still going to continue these posts, though not necessarily on the blog. One of my resolutions is to start posting more content on the blog Facebook page, so while I will still do WW posts on the blog for now, I am also going to start transitioning and doing those posts on the Facebook page rather than the blog.

You know I had to throw some Dr. Who in here.
I'm also not going to be starting any new weekly memes at this time. I know some people like doing weekly memes, but I've discovered that they aren't my style. While I enjoyed doing them I also found them constricting. I would rather write a Wellness Wednesday post because I found something awesome that I wanted to share rather than write one because I "had" to as part of a weekly meme.

I want to instead focus my attention on going back to what I started this blog for: sharing anything and everything I find that I think y'all should know about. It's what I love, it's what I'm good at, and it's what started all this. So I hope y'all have a wonderful and prosperous 2016, and I hope you stick with me throughout it.

Wellness Wednesday - Dancing (and Review)

As some of you may have noticed, I have been neglecting the Wellness Wednesday posts lately. There are two reasons for this: 1. I have been doing quite a few Wednesday tour posts and try to avoid double booking posts if possible and 2. School is crazy busy, so taking a break every now and then is very helpful. So my new goal is to post at least 2 a month, and more if possible (because school does come first).

For this week, I wanted to share my newest way of getting exercise: dancing. But not just any type of dancing. You see, I was given the chance to review a DVD of ballroom dance lessons. Now I’ve been primarily practicing how to swing dance, which is something I’ve always wanted to learn how to do. I’m still a beginner, but I’ll probably post a video of myself dancing once I get better. In case you’re interested in doing something similar, here’s more information about the DVDs, as well as my review. Have a great Wednesday!

Ballroom Dancing is fun, and it’s incredibly social. This 7 DVD set, progressively and step by step, takes you into the beginner's world of Ballroom Dance. Here are the four types of dance DVDs:

Swing - This covers the fundamentals of the dance, extensive swing dance lessons, as well as a few beginner patterns. Swing has earned its reputation as one of the most versatile and energizing forms of popular music and continues to attract new converts to its catchy tunes and syncopated beats.

Waltz - DVDs teach the very basics of how to dance the waltz. We include a complete breakdown and detailed instruction for men and women, including dancing to the music, and essential tips for success on the dance floor. You'll learn the essential components of this beautiful dance, such as Rise and Fall, Sway, and Footwork, as well as exploring steps that will showcase your dancing and help you gain the poise to shine on the dance floor! You learn everything from the Box Step to the Twinkle and more.

Rumba - This DVD walks you through an amazingly fun array of beginner dance steps that are sure to light a fire on the dance floor. From the very basics, our professional Rumba instructors guide you through every step of the way.

Foxtrot - Popularized at the beginning of the 20th century by vaudeville performers, Fox's Trot was quickly adopted by ballrooms across the nation and transformed into the dance we know as Foxtrot today. Foxtrot not only showcases grace and flair, but also combines it with the swingin' sounds of some of our best loved jazz musicians.

My Review:
3 stars

I had a fun time learning how to do the foxtrot, waltz, swing, rumba. The instructors were helpful and explained details well (even if they were a bit corny). Each disc was very detailed (each beginning part being around an hour or so long), showing demonstrations of the dances before providing breakdowns of both partners' dance steps before showing the dance steps to music. The menu was also very easy to navigate as the links were broken down. so you could choose exactly what you wanted to watch.

My biggest issue with this starter kit was that the videos were outdated. It says that these were copyright 2007, but the quality made them appear even older (90s or early 2000s). I would have preferred a more updated version of this. I also found it odd that it was odd that the couple on the front of the DVD were not the dance instructors, which I would have expected.

There also was an insert saying to visit their website for a surprise bonus, yet when I visited, the page returned a 404 error. The company should have kept the page up since they are putting these inserts in their products. That irritated me, as it is unprofessional and seems very shady.

All in all, this was a fun and helpful way to learn these four ballroom dances. While I'm not an expert, I do have a beginner's understanding of these dances now. I would recommend these to anyone looking to learn without having to take a class in person.

My Review:
4 stars

I loved these! Both the keyboard and mouse pad were awesome. They were both very comfortable and the perfect size (though I do wish the keyboard was slightly wider, but that's just me being picky). The design is also nice, though some might not like the little sheep on both pads. I found the sheep cute, but I think it could also be seen as decreasing the visual appeal.

Plus, these make great gifts. I ended up giving this set to my mother for her birthday since she is on the computer all day for work which causes pain in her wrists. She loves it and says that it is very comfortable and she's noticed the difference it makes in decreasing the amount of pain her wrists are in at the end of the day.

The only downside about these was that there were difficult to get out of the package and that they are a bit pricey. However, they also come with a 3 year guarantee, which makes the price tag worth it in my opinion. I haven't had to use the guarantee, but will update if I ever need to.

Wellness Wednesday - Foot Soak Review

Oleavine Multi-Purpose Foot Soak is enriched with essential oils such as tea tree oil and botanicals such as neem oil which are perfect for soothing tired, sore feet as well as soaking away fungus and embarrassing foot odor causing bacteria. Our unique blend of Epsom salt, MSM, & trace mineral rich salts from the Dead Sea and Himalayas create a world-class mineral hot springs experience for your feet, helping to soften rough calluses and provide nourishing relief.

The soak also comes with a 90-day money back guarantee, so if you aren't 100% satisfied with the foot soak, you can return it with no hassle.

My Review:
4 stars

After having surgery on my feet, I've grown used to having pain and soreness in my feet, especially after a long day of walking around campus. So when I was given the opportunity to review this, I jumped at it. And after using it, I'm sold for life. Not only did this help relieve my sore feet after a long day of walking, it also helped get rid of funky foot odors, which I loved. I was actually surprised by how effective it was at not only getting rid of the odors, but also with how good the soak smelled. I knew that it had tea tree oils in it and was supposed to smell like it, but usually when I use an item like this, the smell is either nonexistent or overpowering. This was a happy combination of the two, which made using the soak even better. While this seems a bit expensive for the amount you received, it was totally worth it to me and I would definitely continue using this in the future.

Wellness Wednesday - Climate Change National Day of Action

Today, the People’s Climate Movement is organizing a National Day of Action. People all across the US will be participating in marches, aimed towards raising awareness and demanding action on climate change.

From their website:
“We are calling for a sustainable, democratic and just economy that preserves our planet and works for all peoples.

At the end of 2015, nations will meet again to negotiate an United Nation’s climate agreement in Paris that commits all countries to address climate change. What comes out of Paris will not mark the end of our efforts but could be an important step in the global process of confronting climate change.

This fall we will continue to build a powerful movement for change and bring the demand for bold action to our leaders in anticipation of the Paris climate talks. We will insist that our public leaders support us in taking action in building a new economy that will avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis. And, we will call out those public leaders, corporations and other organizations that are standing in the way of progress as they deny the science and block the popular alternatives.”

So why am I sharing this with you? Seems like an odd topic to talk about for Wellness Wednesday. Yet, I think it’s the perfect topic. So much of our health, both physical and mental is related to the world we live in. Again and again, studies have shown how nature plays such an important role in our lives, whether it be breathing cleaner air to help those with asthma and other breathing conditions or taking a walk in a park to help relieve stress. Our environment and climate plays a big role in our overall well-being. Therefore, why wouldn’t you want to preserve the world you live in?

Another reason I want to talk about climate change is because it’s a topic no one really wants to talk about. It’s a big, scary issue that seems insolvable. People either don’t believe in it, or they think people are overreacting about the issue, or they think they can’t make a difference. However, recent research is showing that this is an unavoidable issue. It’s real. And it’s not something we can keep putting off. Yes, it’s scary to think about. And it’s not going to be an easy solution. However, the first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge that there is a problem. And a solution. And that’s what this day of action is about. It’s the first step in the fight against climate change. It’s made up of many people contributing in small ways, tiny drops of water coming together to create a flood of support. Whether it’s attending one of the marches, sharing about it on Facebook, or just learning more about the topic, everyone can make a difference. You can click here or above to go learn more about the People’s Climate Movement, or just go out and learn on your own. Either way, this isn’t an unavoidable, unbeatable opponent. Yes, climate change is a serious issue. Yes, we can solve it. And yes, we will all benefit from doing so.

Wellness Wednesday - No Time For Stretch Marks Lotion Review

If you saw this two days ago (or just got the email with the draft version), I'm so sorry, but this post ended up going live before I actually finished it. So, this is the completed version. If you didn't see that first draft, then just pretend you didn't read this at all and continue to the next paragraph.

So here we are at another Wellness Wednesday. Now I know I haven't talked in-depth about my weight in the past. You know that I want to lose weight and get healthier, but it's a deeper issue than that. You see, I gained a drastic amount of weight from my junior year of high school into college. A lot of this was due to stress and my habit of emotional eating. I've since made changes in my life, and I'm doing a lot better now than when I was 18.

However, one of the side results of gaining so much weight in such a short amount of time was stretch marks. I've gotten to a point now in my life where I am comfortable in my skin. However, I've always wanted to try and do something about my stretch marks that didn't require drastic measures. So when I was given the chance to review Mom Of 11 Kids' No Time For Stretch Marks lotion, I was all for it, especially once I learned more about it.

No Time for Stretch Marks is formulated with seven all-natural butters and oils to nourish damaged skin and help regenerate skin cells. Our patented technology quickly repairs and diminishes the appearance of even the most stubborn stretch marks.

- Triple action formula firms, reduces, and repairs skin
- Helps promote healthy skin cells
- Hypo-allergenic and dermatologist tested
- For use on belly, arms, thighs, sides, breasts - you name it!
- No unnecessary chemicals, alcohol, parabens, steroids, phthalates, artificial fragrance, artificial dyes, mineral oil, petrolatum, soy, gluten, dairy, or potentially harmful preservatives

My Review:
4 stars

I loved using this! After using this for a month, I noticed my stretch marks diminishing. And not only did it help my stretch marks decrease, but it also smells good and makes my skin feel great. I haven't noticed an enormous difference yet, but I will definitely keep using this, as this is one of the only products I've ever tried that actually made a big difference in decreasing my stretch marks. I know the price seems a bit much, but truthfully, you don't need to use a huge amount to make this work, so it's worth it. If you're trying to diminish your stretch marks, I highly recommend giving this a try.

Today's another de-stress day. Between school, work, and life in general, things are hectic and crazy. And I figure that I'm not the only one who might need some stress relief today. I love the Axis of Awesome, they are a great comedy act. These are two songs of theirs that always cheer me up so I hope it does the same for you.

Wellness Wednesday - Another Omega-3 Fish Oil Review

So I keep trying new brands of fish oil, both because I’m asked to and because I’m always looking for the best supplements at the best price. Last month, I was given the opportunity to review Life & Food’s Omega-3 Supreme Fish Oil 1400mg capsules. I planned on writing about the benefit of omega-3s, but then I saw this on Life & Food’s Amazon page and had to share because they summed it up pretty well.

“Studies have shown that diets high in Omega-3 fatty acids may lower a person's health risks. Eating a diet rich in fatty acid containing fish - cold-water swimmers such as pollock, sardines and salmon - can help lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. Some studies show there is a proven link that EPA and DHA reduces inflammation from arthritis conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Other sources of Omega-3 include olive oil, walnuts and flaxseed.” (From Life & Food’s Amazon page)

Life & Food Omega-3 Supreme Advantage
- Fish Oil concentrate made from IFOS 5-star certified fish oils.
- Sourced from wild Alaskan caught Pollock and a sustainable and certified operation by MSC.
- USA manufactured and laboratory tested in FDA, GMP, NSF certified facilities.
- Molecularly distilled, clean refined and tested.
- Easy to swallow, soft gelatin capsules enteric coated for max absorption and no fish burps.
- Guaranteed to be pharmaceutical grade 75% Omega-3s

After taking these for a month, here’s what I have to say:

My Review:
3 stars

The capsules were easy to swallow, and I didn't have to deal with fishy burps or breath, which was a big relief.

However, I wasn't a fan of having to take two capsules a day to get an effective dose instead of one and I wasn't a fan of the fishy smell. The smell of omega oils doesn't usually bother me, but these did. I also noticed that I seemed to experience heartburn more frequently as well while taking these this past month, though I don't know for sure if that was due to these.

All in all, these were good omega oil supplements, but I probably won't take them again due to my reaction to taking them. However, I seem to be one of the few who had issues, so I would still recommend looking at other reviews and trying these if they sound like something you'd like.

Wellness Wednesday - Biotin

Since I’ve finally been able to kick my nail biting habit, I now have longer nails. However, years of nail biting has done its damage. My nails are thin and chip or break off easily. I wanted to do something to help repair the damage done to my nails so I started doing my research and came across biotin. Biotin, aka Vitamin B7, is primarily beneficial for your nails, hair, and skin, though there are other health benefits such as increased metabolism and controlling blood sugar levels. For more information, check out WebMD or this article from StyleCraze.

So after learning about biotin and consulting with my doctor, I decided to start using it. So when I was given the opportunity to review these, I jumped at it.

Nourish your hair, skin and nail from the inside out with Maximum Strength 10,000 MCG Biotin from 100Naturals.

100Naturals Biotin has the maximum strength 10,000 mcg PURE biotin in each capsule. One bottle has 90 vegetable capsules (a 3 month supply) that are easy to take and absorb. They are also made in the USA in FDA registered facilities that are NSF and GMP certified as well as cruelty-free.

My Review:
4 stars

These capsules were easy to swallow and didn’t have an odor, which I really enjoyed. And after taking these for a month now, I’ve already started to notice a change in my nails. My fingernails not only grow faster, but they seem to be coming in stronger than they used to. I’ve had fewer nails chip or break off and the tips of my fingernails don’t bend as much as they used to when pushed down. However, I’ve also noticed some other benefits.

For instance, I’ve noticed that my hair isn’t coming out as much when I shower or brush it as it used to. I have very thick hair, so losing some of it made sense, but now that I’m taking biotin, it’s decreased a bit.

Unfortunately, I haven’t really noticed any difference to my skin or my metabolism though, which I was hoping for. However, I’ve only been taking these for a month now, so hopefully, that will change more in the future.

My other issue with these were the price. You get a 3 month supply for about $14, which isn’t bad, but there are cheaper alternatives available. However, while the cheaper alternatives contain the same amount of biotin, they also contain calcium as calcium carbonate, which doesn’t seem like it would make that big of a difference unless you were allergic to it or had high blood calcium levels. However, that would be up to you to decide whether you wanted to pay more for pure biotin or less for a mix with calcium carbonate added in.

Overall, these definitely show promise, and I will continue taking them to see if they keep working and improving my nail health (among other things).

Wellness Wednesday - Garcinia Cambogia

Yes, I realize that today is Tuesday, not Wednesday. This was originally going to be last week's WW post. However, I ended up being asked to host two tours on Wednesday, so I decided not to post this then. I was going to push it back to this week, but when I looked back on past weeks, I realized just how bad I've been about posting for WW. So, I decided to do a double Wellness Wednesday post this week instead of postponing again.

I decided to do a post on garcinia cambogia because I've been hearing a lot about it lately. Jonah Hill credited his drastic weight loss a few years ago to using garcinia cambogia, and he's not the only one. So many celebrities and health gurus have been talking about it.

Now, I've struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. While I realize that I will never be skinny and am okay with that, I do want to be healthy. And part of being healthy is getting back in shape and losing some of my extra weight (no joke...doctor's orders). I've already started exercising more and eating healthier, but I wanted to see if using garcinia cambogia would help. I tried it in the past, but didn't really see drastic results. In fact, I couldn't even tell if the results I was getting was due to the garcinia or just due to the lifestyle changes I'd made.

Now that I had a pretty good weight loss baseline, I was ready to try again. I was given the opportunity to review Pinnacle Nutrition's 100% Pure Garcinia Cambogia. They claimed to be the most potent garcinia cambogia available, so I figured I'd give it a try. Here's their information and my review:

Lose Weight Or Your Money Back!

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted this to work. I truly did. Unfortunately, I did not get the results I was expecting. I didn't really get any results at all actually. I took these for 2 weeks and in that time, I actually gained weight instead of losing it. I didn't notice any energy increase but I did notice that it would raise my blood pressure and heart rate, side effects I wasn't expecting. Which leads me to the fact that...

The company claims in their description that there are no side effects, but I had several that could potentially be linked to these. Along with the raised blood pressure and heart rate, I found myself feeling nauseous often while taking these. I started expecting to become nauseous while taking these, which is never a good sign. And once I stopped taking them, I noticed that I wasn't experiencing nausea anywhere near as often as I had been.

The only reason I gave this a two star instead of a one star is because I couldn't link the symptoms I was having to the garcinia. While I did notice an increase in symptoms, I continued having them after I stopped taking the garcinia. So, I don't know if the capsules were to blame or not, but I won't be using them again, and I wouldn't really recommend these. However, this is just my experience. If you look on Amazon, they've gotten lots of great reviews, so I could have just been one of the anomalies. Nevertheless, I won't be using these again nor would I recommend them.

Wellness Wednesday - Stress Relief

I am currently preparing for my college move coming up this Saturday, which means a lot of packing, paperwork, and planning. As well as lots and lots of stress. Now, I’m betting that I’m probably not the only person stressed out, so to make hump day better, here’s some great stress relief. I'm a big Doctor Who fan and I absolutely love this Comic Relief skit. Enjoy :)

Wellness Wednesday - Eye Mask Review

I have issues sleeping, and I have been looking for ways to help myself not only sleep, but also stay asleep. So, I’ve been trying several different eye masks, looking for the best one for me. I reviewed another earlier this year, and so I was looking for something a little different, so long as it still worked. Therefore, I decided to review this mask by Goddess Eye Masks.

Tired of being woken up earlier than expected? Well then get ready for endless nights of being fully rested with our Satin Eye Mask, which comes with a 100% Lifetime Warranty and 100% Money Back Guarantee.

My Review:
3 stars

This was a so-so eye mask for me. While it was comfortable, it didn't block out all the light (or near as much) like others I've tried have. Plus, I couldn't get the mask to stay on my face when I was sleeping, as the thin strings aren't very sturdy or secure. While this was an okay face eye mask, I've found better working or on par masks for even cheaper than this in my local store, much less online. So you can go ahead and give this a try if you'd like, but you might want to go ahead and look for an alternative.

Wellness Wednesday - Dead Sea Bath Salts Review

I'm back! Yep, I'm back to posting on a regular schedule again. And so for today's Wellness Wednesday, I am reviewing Adovia's 1.75 pound bag of Dead Sea Salt. These salts supposedly helps provide relief for sore muscles, something I am desperately in need of after sleeping on a couch for several days and doing a lot of moving and heavy lifting. So here are the salts I'm reviewing:

-Dead Sea Salts have a much higher mineral concentration than Epsom Salts along with a high concentration of over 26 minerals essential for proper skin health and beauty, natural soothing, and relaxation.

-Adovia Dead Sea Salt is fine grain for faster dissolving and packaged in a resealable zip lock bag

-Provides relief from Psoriasis, Eczema, and Arthritis symptoms.

-Find relief from aches and pains by soaking in a bath full of these Salts. Rejuvenates, exfoliates, and softens while it soothes!

-Contains absolutely zero additives, colors, or scents.

My Review:
4 stars

Since I suffer from back and feet pain that isn't easily relieved, I was excited to see if these would work. And they did help. After using these, i noticed that I wasn't feeling all of the minor aches and pain that I put up with on a daily basis. It also helped with my back pain, though the effect didn't last very long once I got out of the bath. These salts also didn't have much of a scent, which I kind of liked since I was using them more for medicinal purposes rather than pampering ones. All in all, I liked using these salts and would likely purchase them in the future.
