AYL Portable Bluetooth Outdoor/Waterproof Speaker Review

I've wanted a speaker I could use in my shower for a while now, so I jumped at the chance to review the AYL Portable Bluetooth Outdoor/Waterproof Speaker. Turns out, I'm not the only one who thought this sounded like an awesome speaker since it turns out my parents bought me the exact same one as a gift. The one in the photos is actually the one my mother bought me, but since I also received a free one to review, I'm just adding that disclaimer as well. Here's more about the speaker and my review:

This is a great shower speaker. Even my roommate keeps "borrowing" it when she showers because she loves it so much.

Using the speaker is super easy. All you have to do is turn it on, connect the Bluetooth and you're good to go! The speaker boops when it turns on (plus there is a light that lets you know whether it's on or off), and boops when you connect your device, so you know you are connected.

The sound is great, and the volume is easy to adjust, which I love since I listen to a wide variety of songs and the sound level varies greatly from song to song. So not having to get out of my shower to change the volume is awesome. I also like the fact that I can leave my Kindle in my bedroom, close the door to both my bedroom and my bathroom, and the speaker still works just fine. Plus, if you are using your phone, you can use the speaker to take a call. You can switch from your music to a call and then back with the push of a button.

The only downside to this is that there is no way to skip or go back to a song. With everything else this speaker can do, why it can't do such a simple action is beyond me.

Way Out West Romantic Candle Set Review

Valentine’s Day is coming up next week, so in light of that, I wanted to share a great gift idea with you. These are gorgeous candles that would make a great romantic gift. To start with, they were well packaged, to the point where I would feel comfortable sending this straight to someone as a gift. The candles themselves are in nicely decorated containers, and the colors nicely complemented each other. The candles also came with easy to follow instructions for prime usage, as well as a nicely designed metal wick dipper that I now use to extinguish all my candles with little to no smoke.

My only issue with the candles were the scents. I liked the Romantic Rose, but I wasn't a fan of the Raspberry White Chocolate. The candle didn't smell anything like raspberries or white chocolate in my opinion, and while I can't really describe the scent, I didn't like it at all. However, my roommate liked it, so I ended up giving that candle to her, so I guess it's just up to personal preference when it comes to the scents. They also are not very strong or overly perfumey, which I greatly appreciated, but others who like more strongly scented candles might not like it. Overall though, I liked these candles and would highly recommend them for candle lovers (or those looking for a fun, romantic gift).

I loved using this. Absolutely loved it. We’re replacing all the flooring in the house right now, and are in the process of removing tile, a dusty, dirty job. I whipped up a bottle of this cleaner (using just a plain old, $1 spray bottle) and used it on everything. Windows, mirrors, floors, the bathroom…you name it, I used this cleaner on it. Not only did it work wonderfully, I didn’t get a headache from using it, like I do when using bleach or other cleaners. The smell wasn’t horrible and overpowering as well, another bonus. Plus, I got quite a lot of use out of the packets I used, and I still have some to spare. These are definitely worth the price, and I highly recommend them. I know I’ll definitely keep using these in the future :)

So, my review has changed slightly due to recent events. When I went to use the cleaner again, I discovered that somehow, two of the packets I had left over had gotten damaged, even though they were still stored in the original packaging, and leaked all over the place. I stored the packets properly, and they were sitting with other cleaning supplies, all of which were perfectly fine. I contacted the company, and they said that they would look into it. So, this significantly affected my review, since if you can't even store them without fear of them leaking, then why bother getting them? Hopefully I'm just the odd anomaly and this doesn't happen to anyone else. Nevertheless, I would still recommend giving these a try as they are great cleaners.

RFID Blocking Sleeves - Information and Two Reviews

Nowadays, banks and credit card companies are rolling out more and more RFID chipped cards, so I've decided to learn more about them.  While using RFID chips in your cards is supposed more secure and more convenient than the magnetic stripes we’re all used to, they’re still not 100% safe. The problem with RFID chips is that people can create or buy and then use a card reader to steal the information off your RFID chip and then use it to create a new card with all your information on it for their spending spree. So, how do you stop this theft when the person doesn’t even need to get close to you to take your information? By using tools such as RFID blocking sleeves.

So what are these sleeves? Sleeves that shield your credit card or passport are inexpensive, and are basically all they are is a pouch lined with heavy aluminum foil. They’re smaller, and are designed to hold one or two of your cards in them. Keep in mind, most sleeves don’t entirely block transmission of card data (nothing is 100% fool proof), but using a sleeve or wallet makes the likelihood of the card being read much less.

So, to test out my theory, I received two different brands (for free) of RFID blocking sleeves to put to the test and see how they work. And so, here’s my reviews:

These sleeves are absolutely gorgeous! I received the rose and the sunflower ones to review. One had the slit on the top and the other had the slit on the side. I found that the card with the slit on the top was easier for me to use, but both work fine.

However, my biggest concern was if these actually work. The fact that these sleeves have gone through government testing (approved FIPS 201 for Use as Electromagnetically Opaque Shields) was very reassuring to me, yet I still wanted to find a way to test them that didn’t require me breaking the law. 

While looking up ways to test it, I found several articles including one from Consumer Reports that gave me my testing idea. Keep in mind, this is just my own personal test, so I’m not claiming any expertise. Since these are designed to block radio waves, I tested these by using a radio. I put the cards on top of the radio antennae to see if the signal was distorted or blocked in any way.

I found that when I used the cards, the radio signal was affected. The difference was noticeable between me using the card and not using it. The volume lowered and it sounded like the songs were skipping some since words were being left out (due to being blocked). However, the radio antennae was still able to pick up radio waves, just not all of them. So while this didn’t block all of the radio waves, it did block some of them, which would make my information on my RFID chip harder to steal.

So, even though it didn't block all the radio transmissions, after researching, I discovered that virtually no sleeves or wallets block all transmissions. However, these sleeves did block the transmissions significantly, to the point where I feel like my information would be safe.

All in all, these are fun, colorful sleeves that work, and have gone through rigorous government testing (which not many other sleeves can claim). So even though they may be more expensive and you get fewer sleeves, I still think these are a good value and recommend getting them.

Also, the passport sleeve didn't fit, and I actually ripped one of the sleeves attempting to get my passport to fit.

I love these! No seriously, I absolutely love them. They are so handy and helpful, and really came in handy recently. While traveling I ended up staying in a hotel that didn’t have a single clothes hanger in the closet. Fortunately, I had these in my bag since I wanted to review them, and I was able to hang up two of my shirts and my long dress to boot. These work so well, and they do a great job keeping my clothes wrinkle free. I also used this as a hook to hang my purse on and it stayed there all night long (and if you know me, you know my purse is not light). I also dropped one in the shower, and not only did it clean well, there’s no sign of rust or damage, which is great.

Since I’m traveling again in a few days, I will be adding a video showing my use of the clips then, but you’ll just have to settle with a photo for now. All in all, these are so useful and helpful, I highly recommend getting a pack and putting them to the test.

I loved the fact that the citronella smell wasn’t extremely overpowering. The bracelets actually smelled nice, which usually isn’t the case (for me at least) when using citronella products. I also liked the fact that they were very easy to put on and fit to size. They did a great job keeping the mosquitoes away, and I was very happy with their performance.

They also hardly weighted anything, which made it easy for my friends and I to forget we were wearing them. However, this was also a bit problematic since the biggest problem I had with these though is that they would keep falling off every now and then. Since my friends and I were out on my back porch, it wasn’t that big of a problem, since we’d eventually notice and be able to find the bracelet fairly easily. However, if you were hiking somewhere, or on the move, if the bracelet fell off, you wouldn’t be able to find it that easily.

Plus, even if you don’t lose one, each bracelet will only last you 24 hours (though ours lasted a bit longer since we stored them in the bag they came in). So if it’s just you using the pack, then it’s a good bargain, since you can get a lot of use out of them. However, if you were going camping or hiking for more than a day or two or with multiple people, you would need to buy multiple packs. Each pack is $14, which adds up quickly if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

So while these are great for the occasional get together or for infrequent use, if you’re going to be spending lots of time outdoors, I would recommend buying a spray instead, or finding another cheaper alternative unless you are okay with spending a lot of money to buy these.

These are great to use, especially for an outside BBQ like I had on the 4th, as these really are unbreakable (and they did get knocked around/dropped numerous times). They were very easy to clean, and I liked that they are BPA free as well. They are a very decent size, and could be used with other drinks as well as wine. My biggest concerns when using these were that they wouldn’t stand on their own well and that they would be easy to spill. Fortunately, these stood up well on their own, and the only difficulty spill wise came when people would forget that these were collapsible, and would squeeze them too hard, causing the drinks to spill out. But I knew that was a possibility when I bought them, and it didn’t happen very often, so I’m still very pleased with these cups.

The only downside was the smell. Even after repeated washes, I could still smell the silicone even after repeated washes. I do however have a very sensitive sense of smell, and only one of my friends was able to smell the silicone as well, so this probably wouldn’t be a problem for most people.

All in all though, these were very useful glasses period, and I will definitely be using them more in the future if I’m able to get rid of the smell totally. They are expensive glasses, but just from the amount of use I put them through, I have a feeling these will last a very long time and be worth the money spent.

Now that I'm getting ready to move away to finish my degree, I decided that getting an emergency sewing kit was probably a very good idea. So, when I had a chance to review this, I jumped at it. 

I thought this was a very good sewing kit. It has virtually all the tools I could need for an emergency fix. The color range of threads are sufficient to be used on virtually all of my clothing, and the needle assortment is decent as well. The kit is sleek and easy to carry and the case is strong and easy to open. Plus, almost all the items are securely stored yet easy to remove when needed.

My only problem with the kit was that the thimble kept falling out of the elastic holding it in place. Almost every time I opened the kit or kept it open to use it, the thimble kept falling out, which is a problem when using the kit in an emergency. The kit also only comes with one safety pin, and no room to store more in the elastic band holding the pin, which I wasn't a big fan of. The kit also came with two straight pins, but more could be added and stored in the plastic container holding them. 

All in all, this was a very decent emergency sewing kit. I will definitely use this in the future, and if you're looking for an emergency kit, I would recommend giving Quick Stitch a try.

My long dress (67")

I never used to use wash bags, but after using these, I’m never going back. Not only did these bags work to protect my bras, they also helped keep my socks together in the wash. In fact, I haven’t lost a single sock since using these laundry bags. I just pick up the bag full of socks and throw it straight into the dryer, saving time and making it easier to find and sort them afterwards.  

I also found that I could use the bags to safely wash my delicate formal wear. For example, I used to use a pillowcase to wash one of my long dresses (recommended by the seller). Living with three cats, my roommate and I are dealing with an ongoing pissing contest/dominance battle between the three, so this spray definitely saw a lot of use. It worked well, and I loved the fact that there weren’t lots of chemicals in it, like sprays we had previously used. Plus, I loved that it worked on the smell, as that has been a big issue in our house. That being said, the only downside to this is that it was a lot of work to use. It was an 8 step process for me, and took a long time for a simple cleaning job. Plus, sometimes I had to reuse the product after waiting several hours to fully remove stains. However, it still worked really well for me, and it’s healthy for both humans and pets, so I’m satisfied by and recommend it.

Fulcrum Gallery Artwork Review - Invictus Print

I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing one of Fulcrum Gallery’s prints. Being an art fan with very eclectic tastes, I agreed. At first, I was blown away by all the many options available, and finally decided to just look at the canvas word art since I particularly like word art. After spending two hours (yes, I did spend two hours looking), I decided to choose a print featuring the iconic poem Invictus against the backdrop of a rocky coast's lighthouse.

How it was supposed to look according to my specs.

Next, I was able to customize my print. The customization was easy, as there was an interactive image that would change to demonstrate what your print would look like depending on the options you chose. Warning: make sure you have plenty of time to pick and choose, as this process can be very time consuming. First, you could choose to either buy a simple print of the image, or you could choose between 3 other options: laminate, canvas, or frame. Depending on which of the three you chose, you could then go on to customize your entire print, from the type of wrap and brushstrokes you wanted to the type of frame and mat color (the color in between the frame and your print) you desired. There was a wide variety of choices, and yes, I did try them all to create my perfect print. I finally decided on the canvas museum wrap with regular 0.75” bars and no brushstrokes.

After I created my ideal print, I placed my order and waited. In the meantime, I visited their helpful article on how to hang canvas artwork (there's an article on how to hang framed art as well) and their blog. A week later, I received my very securely packaged print in the mail. In fact, I had a bit of a hard time removing it from the packaging, it was so well wrapped! However, it was worth the effort, as the canvas print turned out beautifully. It came exactly as I had ordered it, and  I absolutely love it, and it now has a very prominent place on my wall.
