Hello there! Jess Haines here. I’m the author of the H&W Investigations series—urban fantasy novels about Shiarra Waynest, a human private investigator in an alternate, present-day New York. Somehow she keeps getting pulled into supernatural troubles way above her pay grade…
Emily invited me to swing by to tell you about my most memorable birthday experience. Don’t laugh at me, but… it was my trip to Vegas for my 21st birthday. With my mom.
I was never much of a party girl, so planning to head to Sin City for my birthday left me feeling a mixture of trepidation and excitement. On the other hand, I’ve never seen my mom so excited to take a trip in her life.
We stayed at Circus Circus. My first night, she took me to the casino to try my hand at the slot machines. I won about $40—not bad for a first timer, eh?
We wandered around town, checking out the different hotels and entertainment. My mom bought me my very first (*coughcough*) legal drink, an Irish mocha. The bartender put so much whiskey in it that I couldn’t choke it down, so my mom ended up finishing it off for me. Some bender, eh?
While I was there, we enjoyed excellent food at Paris and the Bellagio, and some fabulous entertainment, including the Sirens of TI in front of the Treasure Cove casino and the “dancing” water fountains in front of the Bellagio.
By far, the most memorable moment for me in Vegas was the Thunder From Down Under show at the Excalibur hotel.
Think Chippendales with some very buff hunks sporting over-the-top Australian accents.
Don’t forget that I went to this show with my mom.
Did I mention the part where I got called up on stage to compete in a “best fake orgasm” contest? It was me against a middle aged woman and a tottering grandma who was also celebrating her birthday and had to be helped up onto the stage. Spoiler alert: grandma won.
That is truly a birthday memory I will have seared into my brain forever.

Thanks again for having me, Emily! And a very Happy Birthday to you!
BOOK DETAILS:
Forsaken by the Others:
The Others–vampires, werewolves, things that go chomp in the night–don’t just live in nightmares anymore. They’ve joined with the mortal world. And for private investigator Shiarra Waynest, that means mayhem…
Have a one night stand with a vampire, and you can end up paying for it for eternity. P.I. Shiarra Waynest, an expert on the Others, knows that better than most. Yet here she is, waking up beside charismatic vamp Alec Royce with an aching head…and neck. Luckily, Shia has the perfect excuse for getting out of town–namely, a couple of irate East Coast werewolf packs who’d like to turn her into a chew toy.
On Royce’s suggestion, Shia temporarily relocates to Los Angeles. But something is rotten–literally–in the state of California, where local vampires are being attacked by zombies. Who could be powerful enough to control them–and reckless enough to target the immortal? Following the trail will lead Shia to a terrifying truth, and to an ancient enemy with a personal grudge…
