Birthday Bash Day 18 - Jessica Freely

Jessica, thanks so much for stopping by. So, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?
Thank you for throwing such a splendid party, Emily. Happy Birthday!

I'm an m/m romance author and a writing instructor. I make my home in southeast Michigan, where I was born and raised. In fact, except for when we were in college, neither my husband nor I have ever lived more than two miles from Woodward Avenue in our lives. We have a little dog named Ruthie and a cat named Hector. We're science fiction and rpg geeks to the core and many of my books include science fiction and fantasy elements.

I've published nine books with Loose Id and am currently dipping a toe into self-publishing with my Freedom Series, a spinoff from His Own Devices. My newest release is Alex in Wonderland, a contemporary romantic comedy short coming out from Etopia on April 19. (I think that's tomorrow!)

How did you get started writing?
When I was six I said I wanted to be either an actress or a writer. But when I got older I set both of those dreams aside, instead pursuing a degree in computer science. I was dating a man who wrote stories and I was always egging him on to write more, submit more, etc. One day we were discussing a story idea and he turned to me and he said, "You should write." I think I just needed someone to give me permission, because from that point on, I wrote and I never stopped. He and I are good friends to this day and I will never be able thank him enough.

So what inspired Alex in Wonderland?
Well, a friend of mine, a bi man who’d recently take a trip overseas, emailed me one day. All his message said was, "Everything you've heard about Berlin sex clubs is true." Well, needless to say, I phoned him immediately! He told me a little bit about his experience, and I thought, what if someone went to a sex club and everything went wrong? That's how Alex in Wonderland was born.

What’s the one genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?
I have not done an historical, and I’d love to. The research is a bit of a stumbling block for me. When a story idea grabs me, I usually want to dive right in, but I do have a few historical ideas on the backburner and in fact, a work in progress that is a contemporary with historical elements.

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?
I’m not sure if this is the kind of thing you mean when you say genre, but I really don’t care for alpha heroes in m/f. I know they’re wildly popular, but they’re not for me. I’m not at all a submissive woman, and I don’t find that kind of aggressive display attractive in a man. I haven’t really read any femdom romance. I wonder if I’d like that better?

So, what are you working on right now? Got any releases planned, or still writing?
Why yes, so glad you asked! I mentioned earlier that I’m experimenting with self-publishing with a series of short stories set in the same universe as His Own Devices. I call it the Freedom Series and the first book, which came out in January, is entitled Unlawful.

In a world where being gay is unlawful and slavery is legal, two men fight for their lives, for their desires, and for justice. Larke is a corporate lackey with a secret. Droje is a freedom fighter on the run. Each spells trouble for the other, but the passion between them will not be denied, no matter what the risk.

Larke and Droje’s adventures continue in Undaunted, scheduled for release on May 14.

Alright, one last question. Do you have a favorite memory from your 21st birthday?
Oh boy, that was quite a while ago. I’m trying to do the math to figure out what year of college that was. LOL. Okay, right, my sophomore year, which means I was hanging out with the engineering students at that time. Ohhhh yeah. Let me tell you something about partying with engineers, they make their own gadgets. I vaguely recall a ritual reminiscent of a Japanese tea ceremony, only involving a hydraulic bong, but most of that evening is a blur.

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!
You bet, hon. Happy birthday!

What can go wrong in a sex club? Plenty, as Alex discovers on his first visit to Wonderland.

Fresh out of a sexless relationship with a manipulative, two-timing boyfriend, Alex enters the notorious sex club, Wonderland, looking for action. Instead he winds up in one disastrous predicament after another. Between the inept dom, the malfunctioning steam room, and the “alien” go-go boy with glow-in-the-dark everything, it’s beginning to look like Alex will never get laid again. Then a mysterious masked man gives Alex the dance -- and the blowjob -- of his life, only to disappear again without a trace.

When the night is through, and the masks are cast aside, Alex will discover a passion that lasts far beyond one night in Wonderland.

  2. I never liked alpha heroes either; they led me to reject romances altogether until m/m came along. So glad there'll be more in the His Own Devices universe!

  3. I think that may be why I stopped reading M/F romance--the alpha males. Just not to my personal taste at all. My real life reflected an alpha role, and I could never connect with the heroines. Yet, I love romances, especially paranormal, fantasy, and science fiction. Thank goodness I found MM! Thanks for a thought provoking interview.
