The Ambitious Barrister and the Maid Review Tour

Blurb:
Sarah-Ann Jennings is quite happy to satisfy her master’s lust. Forced into domestic service by a penny pinching aunt, she is determined to make enough money to secure her own future and that of her eccentric younger brother. She rather enjoys him, besides.

There is, of course, no question of any emotional entanglement between them. Mr. Alfred Grand is a cold-hearted fortune hunter in search of a wealthy wife, after all.

For all that, when Sarah-Ann comes to suspect that somebody may be trying to poison him for reasons of their own, she is ready to put all her energy and determination into finding out who it is. This steamy romance set in the mid-Victorian UK is definitely for over eighteens.

Excerpt:
The man’s eye fell on me. I would have liked to think that he was wholly moved by pity at the sight of the tears welling in the eyes of the scrawny creature that I then was. There was indeed a spark of sympathy in his, but also some calculation.

That might seem to be a long word for a housemaid, but I had been educated to be a young lady.

Mr Grand was a man who thought ahead. He saw something in me that interested him. It wouldn’t do for now, for though sixteen, I had much filling out to do. He was ready to wait, just as he was prepared to wait for the right chance to further his career. He was a man who saw potentials closed to those with a less penetrating gaze. In pursuing his goals, he was patient.

“She will do very well, Mrs Carr,” he gave that cold smile he sometimes used. “That solves your little problem. Now, as to mine –”

The housekeeper was indignant enough to do what servants, even the higher ones, should never do. She cut him off, which was bad enough, and then she contradicted him. “Hardly, Sir. I have no time to train her, and -”

He drew back. She could not have done more to ensure I got the post. He   looked down his well shaped nose at her and cut her off in turn. “I just hired the girl, Mrs. Carr. That makes an end to the matter. See about her box and the rest.”

Later on, I was willing to bet, he would see about my box himself.

My Review:
3 stars

This definitely lived up to its description as a steamy historical romance. However, I was thrown off by the organization of the story as it seemed to be split with all the steamy scenes in the first half and then the mystery and plot in the second half.

This hampered the story as I didn’t get to know the characters that well, and only really warmed up to them once the mystery kicked in near the middle of the story.

Also, because the story was split this way, the plot in the second half ended up feeling rushed because the first half was more devoted to building up steam between the characters than building up the characters themselves or the plot. However, I enjoyed the suspense and mystery in the second half, as well as an ending that kept you on the edge of your seat till the very end.

Overall, this was a fun, short read, with an awesome closing paragraph. If you like lots of steam in your historical romances, this is the book for you.

Dutch Review Tour

Blurb:
I've spent years holed up in the deepest, darkest parts of the city, fighting to keep Death and her Poochas from crossing the dead back to the living. My skill with a blade is bested only by my menace, my despair, my anguish - the strongest weapons I yield.

Then I meet Juma Landry and it all goes to hell.

She is beauty and love and sex and light, everything I am not. And she makes me want things I haven’t desired in years. But the monsters of my life, the evil lurking in the dark corners of my soul, those places craven and vile, bind me to a past I cannot shake free. As the most skilled Keeper for The Gate, nothing and no one can prevent me from excelling at a job I never wanted. I do it because it is my legacy, a fate I cannot outrun, but when Juma becomes my next assignment, each of her nine lives to be ended by my hand, I must decide: the legacy I never wanted or the love I don’t deserve.

Excerpt:
…just then I saw it, a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye, a swish of black, so like the New York City uniform of the chic and sophisticated but of a different realm altogether. However, more than what I saw was what I felt. The cold that crept into my bones, settled in my blood, and soothed me with its familiarity.

Her.

I knew her essence anywhere had known it since I was a little girl dying on an emergency room gurney as she promised me all kinds of things, love, power, life. Knowing I wanted all of them more than I could say, craved them even as a tiny human, would obsess over them as a grown woman.

Death knew all the right words to whisper in my ear and bring me to her bosom for all eternity, forever beholden to her and her whims, willing to do whatever she asked of me just to see her smile. And what did I receive in return?

Her love which was precious and given out to few.

Except today.

Today she was pissed—the chill of her glare said as much.

“Get up.” She breezed through the doors as they opened at 14th Street.

I followed, obedient and cowed. It was coming, had been coming for months now.

Reproof.

Admonition.

Punishment.

As we reached a more deserted section of the platform, she spun on me, her dark pixie perfectly coiffed, her red lips caught in a sneer, and I prepared, my body tense and ready for whatever she was about to unload. But then her eyes flashed to the right, something caught her attention, and whatever anger and irritation had been directed at me dissipated.

“Stay here, Juma,” she ordered. I stopped, and for once I didn’t say a word, I simply obeyed her command. Her tone demanded it.

Death flew across the subway station, her eyes full of fire and fury, directed somewhere distant and removed. I followed her trajectory and that’s when I saw.

Him.

Tall, lean, solitary.

Calm, confident, beautiful.

And dark. So very dark. As if light long ago stopped seeking refuge in the corners of his body, the cracks of his being. My body heated in places it should not, my blood pulsed a little stronger as I watched him, unable to look away, knowing I should lest he burn a hole straight through my core.

Anyone else would have stepped away from her but he did not, unmoved by her oncoming fury, unafraid of her wrath. Death slammed into him and together they fell into the wall, tiles above his head cracking from the impact. Minutes passed as she harangued him with her words and gestures and her power to bring the pain.

And still he remained.

Until she had enough, said enough, did enough, and sent him on his way, watching as he disappeared into the dark of the subway tunnel, his shadowy self becoming one with the dank environs. Long seconds later, Death remained rooted to the spot and watching the tunnel, as if she expected the beautiful stranger to reappear, but he was gone, lost in the ether.

She finally turned my way and started, the movement slight but noticeable to my discerning eye, as if surprised by my presence, my rare acquiescence to one of her demands.

“Juma,” she as she neared, her ire piqued and ill-contained, “what are you doing?”

“You told me to wait here,” I replied, “so I waited.”

She raised a brow and sneered. “Fine time to start listening to a word I say,” she groused as she breezed past, her chill a balm to the strange heat inspired by the dark stranger, one that touched the tips of my fingers and kissed the depths of my soul.

“Who was that man?” I could not help but ask.

Death spun back around, stopping so suddenly I crashed into her, our bodies pressed against one another, a position quite familiar and yet today, when she was so angry and full of unease, utterly foreign.

“Forget you ever saw him, Juma,” she insisted as she grasped my chin in her hand and searched my eyes, probing for something I could not did not would not know, for she was in no mood to elaborate or educate further.

“He’s from The Gate,” I replied, certain only those rotten souls could inspire such a reaction from her.

She stilled and it was as if all movement stilled with her and only she and I existed, the air sucked from the moment by the words falling from my lips.

Finally she spoke, low and deadly, her tone serious, her words a warning. “He is someone far more dangerous than The Gate—he is a beautiful, tortured soul seeking absolution. Forget him.”

My Review:
3 stars

I had some very mixed feelings about this book. First, the characters. I liked both Juma and Death, two sassy, kickass women who I loved rooting for. I also loved their somewhat snarky interactions with each other. Yet while I liked those two, I disliked Dutch. He came off as an oversexed jerk to me, and even at the end of the book I was still "meh" about him.

Second, the plot was interesting. I liked the darker urban fantasy, and
However, at times the plot became a bit clunky, and I ended up skimming at times. Part of this I feel is due to the amount of sex. While I'm not a prude, sex should have a purpose. It should help forward the plot or the character development, something. Yet there were several sex scenes here that did none of those things. This ended up taking away from the story in my mind. And though this book was not categorized as erotic/a, it should have been.

However, what made this a solid three for me was the writing style. Sometimes, authors go out of their way to create a style unique to them that just ends up being distracting. Here, however, Pavamani's style added to the overall story/tone and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I even found myself dissecting and studying her sentences at times (giant English nerd here) because I liked them so much.

Overall, I feel this is either a hit or miss book. If you are okay with erotica and a jerkish alpha male, then you should definitely give this book a read as the rest of the plot and characters, as well as the writing style, are worth it.

Excerpt:
Glazed, cryptic eyes pierced through me, reminding me of a strung-out junky. His face seemed vaguely familiar, right down to his golden curls. Just couldn’t put my finger on where I’d seen him before. An eerie thrill rippled my spine. The way he was staring creeped me out. I quickly skirted past him, only to have Blondie clasp my arm. Okay, now I was officially freaked.

“Let go of me!” I seethed.

“The time has come,” he blurted.

“What are you talking about?”

“The decision is made … binding.”

This dude was clearly psycho. He spoke in riddles, none of which I understood. “You’ve got me confused with someone else.”

“No, you’re the one.”

My purse, where I normally kept my Taser, was nowhere to be found. He’d better be glad or I’d light his ass up. This whole scene was turning more bizarre by the second. I couldn’t figure out where I was. My surroundings were dim and heat began to consume me. Blondie leaned closer to me. Being nearer, I got a better look at his dilated eyes. His pupils were diamond-shaped, not the usual round. His grip tightened.

“Asshole. Take your hands off me!”

“You’re chosen, and you’re coming with me.”

Though I struggled against him, it didn’t do any damn good. Bright light blazed up ahead, mixed with smoldering heat. I soon realized the light and scalding warmth was coming from giant flames. Doubling my efforts, I fought harder, to no avail. Blondie’s face became a blur, and darkness encompassed me—the scalding heat grew stronger. Time seemed to stand still—my mind swirled in a haze. The only thought that became clear, which seemed to chisel into my mind, was that I had to make the right choice.

Sweat VBT

Blurb:
“The Tryst” tells the story of one woman desperate for the approval of her very dominant partner and the lengths she is willing to go to in order to earn it.

“Me, Her, and Him” suggests that the best way to get over an old man is to get under a new one... especially when his gorgeous wife comes as part of the deal.

From stories of love and passion like “The Elevator” to stories of sheer carnal, insatiable desire like “Bad Girl,” Sweat chronicles the stories of women who take control of their sexuality and go after what satisfies them most—at any cost.

Excerpt from “The Club”:
I am a girl who plays it safe.

Every Friday night, I soak in the tub, pour myself a glass of pinot noir, and curl up with a good book or movie. I am usually deep under my covers by midnight at the latest, every single Friday night. This Friday night started off the same as every one before it. Halfway through my soak, I received a text. It was pretty simple. An address, and the words, Come out and play.

At that moment, I decided that, tonight, I would not be the safe girl. I would let caution go down the drain with my bathwater. I could be responsible tomorrow. I climbed out the warm, soapy water, wrapped myself in a towel, and walked into my closet.

Twenty minutes later, I catch my reflection in the rearview mirror... Not bad. My chocolate skin is clear and beautiful, and my hair blows in the nighttime breeze. My lips and nails are a brazen, come-fuck-me red, and they contrast with the simplicity of my outfit—a semi-tight fitting black dress (I am braless, because only good girls wear bras) and black Chucks. My freshly scrubbed body smells like cocoa butter and black soap. I turn the music up louder and sing along with the filthy lyrics, careful not to miss my exit. I reach my destination, find a place to park, feed the meter, and send the text I know he's waiting for.

CoCo, thanks so much for stopping by. So, tell us a little about yourself.
My name is CoCo Gem. I’m 35 years old, single mom of one teenage son, only child, I love binge watching series on Netflix.

How did you get started writing?

I’ve been writing since kindergarten. At first, I just enjoyed the noise the typewriter made. Eventually, I developed a respect for the words I was typing. My mother really cultivated my love of writing and I took classes and workshops all throughout grade school and majored in English Literature in college. I’ve been exclusively writing for three years. I write mostly short stories and poetry.

What was the inspiration for your book?
I enjoy writing about the human experience. I tend to focus on more taboo subjects—mental health issues, heartache, disappointment, and, sometimes, sexuality.  This book tells the stories of several women who are exploring different aspects of their sexuality.

What’s the one genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?
I would like to try historical fiction. It’s my favorite genre to read, but it requires a lot of research that I haven’t had the time for yet.

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?
I will read pretty much anything, but I’m not interested in writing science fiction. I’ve read some awesome sci-fi books, but I don’t have the imagination to write about futuristic worlds and technology. It’s just not something I’m interested in.

What are you up to right now? Do you have any releases planned, or are you still writing?
I’m working on my first full-length novel, but I don’t have the attention span to work too long on it. I’m also still writing short stories and have a collaboration with another author in the works. I’m working on a book of poetry and short essays.

Alright, now for some random, fun questions. Favorite color?
My favorite color is green.

Favorite movie?
Purple Rain or Lean On Me…. It’s a tie.

Book that inspired you to become an author?
I read On Writing by Stephen King and was really inspired by his memoir. Wally Lamb, Pearl Cleage, and James Baldwin are my favorite authors.

You have one superpower. What is it?
The ability to start a task and actually finish it without becoming distracted by everything else.

You can have dinner with any 3 people, dead, alive, fictitious, etc. Who are they?
1. James Baldwin
2. Prince
3. Michelle Obama

Last question: Which of your characters are you most like and how/why?
I think I mostly relate to the main character in “The Elevator.” She wears her heart on her sleeve, but is afraid for anyone to get too close to her.

Dragon Void Book Blitz

Blurb:
A woman born on the wind...

A Turul princess, Evie North has waited long enough for her “one true love” — a man she’s stopped believing truly exists. She throws caution—literally—to the wind and decides to take matters into her own hands. She chooses a handsome stranger from a crowd and falls into bed with him, hoping love might find her in his arms.

A human man drawn to powers beyond his comprehension...

The only thing Marcus Calais knows is that he’s likely to die in a pointless war but also honor-bound to run into battle. At least until he meets an angel named Evie in Central Park who incites stronger desires than he’s ever had and whose songs drive him to levels of passion he never imagined. After just one night with the lovely, waifish beauty, he discovers he has so much more to live for. Will he sacrifice his principles to stay alive for her?

The immortal dragon who owns both their souls...

“Ked” is what his five siblings call him, but others simply refer to the huge black dragon as The Void. He is darkness personified, but nothing is darker than the enemy he is up against. It will take true darkness to fight the evil permeating his world, and to save the female Fate intended for him. But Fate has a funny way of switching things up when he least expects. What will he find when he ventures forth into the enemy’s lair in search of love?

What other surprises does Fate have in store?

Excerpt:
“You terrify me,” he said softly, and she knew what he said was true. Even if the Wind hadn’t been there to verify his honesty, she’d have known it by the wetness in his eyes. “You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen and the first one I’ve ever wanted so much I’d behave like a rutting stag the first time we meet. I don’t do this, Evie. What I want to do with you is entirely out of character for me. I know you have no reason to believe that because we just met, but it’s the truth.”

She laughed shakily, taken aback by his bare honesty. “Surely there have been others… Look at you.” She waved her hand down his sturdy frame, still crouched before her.

He shook his head. “I’ve tried off and on, but somehow the women I’m most drawn to are wildly inaccessible. You’re the first who’d give me the time of day. That in itself makes you infinitely more amazing to me. But there’s something deeper.”

He reached up a hand and placed his palm against the center of her chest. The simple touch stole her breath. “I can’t put my finger on it, but I really want to know everything there is to know about you.”

Evie found it hard to fill her lungs enough to speak. Finally, in a near whisper, she said, “What if I never trust you enough to share my secrets?”

“Then I’ll have to prove to you that you can.”

She sighed, relieved that he told her the truth, but also more anxious than ever that she hadn’t heard any hint of a lie. If she had, she’d have had an excuse to avoid following through with her crazy plan.

She urged him to stand and laced her fingers through his again. Taking a deep breath, she found that steely will of hers along with the wicked streak that had urged her to seek him out to begin with.

“Rutting stag, huh? I think I like the sound of that.” She grinned up at him. Abruptly he wrapped her in his arms and laid a hot, hungry kiss against her lips. In spite of the cold brick wall he had her pressed into, all she could feel was his heat flooding through her thin dress. She clung to him, melting against him, both of them oblivious to the traffic on the sidewalk passing by like nothing out of the ordinary was occurring. Like she wasn’t on the verge of letting this man fuck her silly against the wall right out in public on a cool spring evening.

The honk of a cab caused Marcus to jump and draw away from her. She held on, reluctant to lose the warmth of his body and the sweet pull of his mouth. A small, petulant sound came out of her and he groaned in response. He placed his hands against the wall on either side of her head and peered down into her eyes.

“You’ll be the death of me, Evie North. But I think you’ll be worth it.”

Dragon Blues Book Blitz

Synopsis:
Even immortal dragons can have crazy exes.

Three thousand years ago, immortal blue dragon Belah and her old lover took their kinks just a step too far, and she's been trying to get over it ever since. The problem is that her ex is still out there wreaking havoc on her world, while Belah spent the last three millennia in hiding.

With her race's world changing, it's time for Belah to show her face again. Finding a new mate should be easy for a dragon as powerful as her, but "baggage" is an understatement when your ex is your race's mortal enemy, and he's just let you know he wants you back.

Determined to move on, Belah finds Lukas and Iszak North--not one, but two gorgeous, musically talented, and especially kinky brothers from one of the dragons' sister races. The pair are perfect for Belah. Their race of falcon shifters mate for life--one look at Belah, and both North brothers know she's their One. The problem is, they have baggage of their own, and Belah's old lover is at the center of it. The brothers can't help but love her in spite of her past, and when Belah answers their mating call and gives herself to them completely, they would do anything to keep her, even forgive her connection to their enemy.

When Belah's old lover calls in a promise, she and her new mates learn there is more at stake than love, and it might take more than fancy knots and an adeptly wielded whip to find true happiness.

Excerpt:
“We’ll be gentle,” Lukas said. He leaned in and Belah gladly opened up for his kiss.

“Don’t lie to her, brother,” Iszak said. “It’ll be as rough as we need it to be, but I have a feeling that’s what you’d rather have, isn’t it, Belah? You’re going to feel so much pleasure it’ll blow your mind, but we’re going to get one thing straight first. You’re going to submit to us the way your kind does to you. By ‘you’ I mean the Dragon Council. I’ve met a few dragons who broke your laws, so I’ve heard stories. If you want to tell me I’m wrong, please feel free to explain, but at the very least, tell me you understand.”

Belah balked, then was rudely reminded of her bindings when a knot dug in hard between her shoulderblades. Behind her, Lukas’s warmth came close and she felt him kneel between her legs. His warm cock brushed against her ass as his lips went to her ears.

“Do you submit?”

“To submit in the manner you ask would be no punishment,” Belah said. “Because it would mean being allowed to neither give nor receive pleasure from anyone besides those I submit to.”

She gazed up at Iszak, her eyelids fluttering when Lukas’s hands slid around her waist and up to cup her breasts and tease her nipples. “That sounds perfect, so do you submit?”

Before her, Iszak moved closer, the head of his cock radiating heat and the delicious aroma of his arousal mere inches from her lips. He reached down and cupped her cheek, stroking his thumb across her lower lip.

“Promise you submit to me and Lukas and only us.”

“I submit to only you, Iszak North and Lukas North, as my true and fated mates. I will take pleasure in no other partner until Fate decrees my days on this earth are done.”

Iszak let out a groan of pleasure that spilled into his gaze. “Fuck, your voice is beautiful when you say all the right words. Shame you won’t be using that mouth to speak for a good long while. Open up, baby.”
