Snare Book Blitz

Blurb:
When Elliot Iverson, a municipal employee responsible for paperwork pertaining to New York City's vampire population, knocks on the door of the Gramercy warren, he wants only to resolve a clerical error. But a sudden snowstorm, a new friendship, and an ill-advised threesome force Elliot to make some big choices about his own life and death.

Excerpt:
When Matthew pulls open the door, a blast of wind and snow swirls in. The snow is piled up on the stoop, and as they watch some of it crumbles onto the carpet of the foyer. The street is drifted with white and all Eli can see is billowing white globes of snow around each of the streetlamps.

“Okay, there’s no way you’re leaving,” Matthew declares, pushing the door shut again and cutting off the frigid stream of air. Eli’s glasses fog up again, but only briefly, and once they’re clear he sees Matthew turn to regard him thoughtfully. “Even if the subway’s still open it’s going to take you forever to get home. Do you want to stay for dinner?”

As he asks, he leans forward and puts his hand over Eli’s where he’s gripping the strap of his bag.

All at once, Eli realizes that he is in a house with Dead people and vampires; that if the trains are down he has effectively no way to get home; and that he’s being propositioned.

“Oh my god,” he says. This is entirely the thing his mom had fretted about, at length, when he announced his intention to move to New York. Because con-artists, homosexuals, anarchists, and vampires. It’s her worst nightmare. Maybe there are drug dealers here too.

Matthew tips his head curiously.

“Oh my god,” Eli says, more frantically. “Oh my god. I can’t get home.”

“Yeah?” Matthew asks, nonplussed.

“Horror stories start like this!”

My Review:
2 stars

I was very conflicted over this story. The blurb sounded amazing and I’ve read other books by these authors, so I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, it didn’t come through. To start, I didn’t really like any of the characters in this book. Eli acted too much like a whiny brat (though I can understand where he’s coming from), Matthew seemed like an abused partner, and Richard was an overall dick. I spent most of the book not liking Richard. He did crappy/horrible things without absolutely no explanation about why he did so, so I kept questioning why he was doing this and allowed to get away with it. I still don’t know what Matthew and Eli see in him. This felt more like a study in Stockholm Syndrome then a romance.

(Potential spoiler warnings in this paragraph)
A large part of this I feel is due to the fact that a lot of stuff was either hinted at or talked about, but never actually shown. So I never got the chance to really know, care about, or like the characters. For example, Matthew kept saying Richard was a nice guy, but we didn’t really get examples of this until the end of the book (which was set 11 months after the start of the book). So Eli spent over 6 months afraid/disliking Richard, and only started getting along with him because he was desperate to be accepted into the warren. Then after over 10 months of not really liking Richard, there’s going to be a romance? Yeah, no. That’s called Stockholm Syndrome.
(End of spoilers)

The most interesting part and saving grace of the story was the worldbuilding. While there were elements of traditional vampires, these vamps were unique and interesting as well. I found myself wanting to know more and more about this world, which was both good and bad. It was good in that it helped draw me in to the story and keep me reading until the end; however, it was bad because I felt like the worldbuilding was missing information. I was left with questions, such as how had things stayed this way for so long? If vamps were so influential in building New York City, then why are they locked away on an island still? Are these the only vampires in the whole world? Why haven’t they outgrown the space they’ve been allotted for decades? Because of this, aspects of the world didn’t seem to be totally thought out or make sense. Plus, there were other parts of this world hinted at but not fully explored, making me wonder if this is supposed to be the start of a series.

Overall, I’m not a huge fan of the book. If there was a sequel, I would potentially read it in order to learn more about this world and to hopefully see my issues in this novella addressed. I like these authors, but this story was just not for me.

Wellness Wednesday - Briskbars Vegan Energy Bars

For this week’s Wellness Wednesday, I wanted to share something new. I have a very busy life, and one of the things I struggle with the most is keeping my energy up, especially when I’m having a hectic day. I’ve tried energy drinks, but decided I wanted to find something healthier. Enter Briskbars vegan energy bars. These sounded like the answer, plus they had some awesome reviews. I still think these are a good idea for people who like energy bars or drinks but are looking for something healthier, but turns out they weren’t to my liking.

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted to like these bars. Not only do they have just 4g of sugar, they're also vegan, GMO free, gluten free, kosher, and dairy free, not to mention a great source of protein. Plus they contained dark chocolate and coconut, two of my favorite flavors. These sounded like a much better option than energy drinks or even other energy bars on the market.

Alas, the taste sunk these for me. I couldn't stand the taste. I can't even describe what this tasted like to me except to say it is something I would never want to put into my body. Maybe it's the guarana, I don't know. And yes, I knew that these weren't supposed to be as sweet as other energy bars, but there's not enough sugar in the world to make these taste better for me. I could barely taste the chocolate, which is the only thing that made these even slightly palatable for me.

Even with the taste, I ate an entire bar because I wanted to see if I would at least get the energy (or the focus and clarity others have apparently reported feeling) promised. I did have a bit more energy and feel a bit more focused after eating the bar, so it did work on that level (which is why this is a 2 star instead of a 1 star review). This benefit is not worth putting up with the taste though, so I'll be giving my remaining bars off to someone who might actually like them because these just weren't for me.

Wellness Wednesday - Garcinia Cambogia

Yes, I realize that today is Tuesday, not Wednesday. This was originally going to be last week's WW post. However, I ended up being asked to host two tours on Wednesday, so I decided not to post this then. I was going to push it back to this week, but when I looked back on past weeks, I realized just how bad I've been about posting for WW. So, I decided to do a double Wellness Wednesday post this week instead of postponing again.

I decided to do a post on garcinia cambogia because I've been hearing a lot about it lately. Jonah Hill credited his drastic weight loss a few years ago to using garcinia cambogia, and he's not the only one. So many celebrities and health gurus have been talking about it.

Now, I've struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. While I realize that I will never be skinny and am okay with that, I do want to be healthy. And part of being healthy is getting back in shape and losing some of my extra weight (no joke...doctor's orders). I've already started exercising more and eating healthier, but I wanted to see if using garcinia cambogia would help. I tried it in the past, but didn't really see drastic results. In fact, I couldn't even tell if the results I was getting was due to the garcinia or just due to the lifestyle changes I'd made.

Now that I had a pretty good weight loss baseline, I was ready to try again. I was given the opportunity to review Pinnacle Nutrition's 100% Pure Garcinia Cambogia. They claimed to be the most potent garcinia cambogia available, so I figured I'd give it a try. Here's their information and my review:

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted this to work. I truly did. Unfortunately, I did not get the results I was expecting. I didn't really get any results at all actually. I took these for 2 weeks and in that time, I actually gained weight instead of losing it. I didn't notice any energy increase but I did notice that it would raise my blood pressure and heart rate, side effects I wasn't expecting. Which leads me to the fact that...

The company claims in their description that there are no side effects, but I had several that could potentially be linked to these. Along with the raised blood pressure and heart rate, I found myself feeling nauseous often while taking these. I started expecting to become nauseous while taking these, which is never a good sign. And once I stopped taking them, I noticed that I wasn't experiencing nausea anywhere near as often as I had been.

The only reason I gave this a two star instead of a one star is because I couldn't link the symptoms I was having to the garcinia. While I did notice an increase in symptoms, I continued having them after I stopped taking the garcinia. So, I don't know if the capsules were to blame or not, but I won't be using them again, and I wouldn't really recommend these. However, this is just my experience. If you look on Amazon, they've gotten lots of great reviews, so I could have just been one of the anomalies. Nevertheless, I won't be using these again nor would I recommend them.

So one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to start taking care of my health. I started a transformation workout challenge, which combines eating healthier and exercising. Along with this, I was asked to review this brand of garcinia cambogia extract. Now I’ve been reluctant to attempt to use these type of weight-loss supplements, but since I was already starting a program, I figured I would give them a try.

I’ve been using this for 3 weeks now and I didn’t really notice much of a difference. While I didn’t notice any negative side effects, I also didn’t really notice any positive ones either. The little weight I’ve lost is mostly due to my diet and exercise changes, and my appetite hasn’t been suppressed. I’ve heard great things about garcinia cambogia before, but it just didn’t work for me.

Woolzies Dryer Balls Review

Woolzies are 100% pure new zealand wool dryer balls that do everything that conventional fabric softeners do plus they reduce drying time by 25%. They are money back guaranteed to last for at least 1,000 loads!

Woolzies have no chemicals at all and are also hypoallergenic so are safe even for people with wool sensitivities.

My Review:

I was not a big fan of these. While they did help soften my load of laundry, so do my fabric softener sheets, so the main appeal of these for me was the decreased drying time. My drying time was barely affected, even after multiple loads. My drying time was decreased 5-10% at most, nowhere near the stated 25%.

I think this is a great concept that just didn't work out.
