Wellness Wednesday - Briskbars Vegan Energy Bars

For this week’s Wellness Wednesday, I wanted to share something new. I have a very busy life, and one of the things I struggle with the most is keeping my energy up, especially when I’m having a hectic day. I’ve tried energy drinks, but decided I wanted to find something healthier. Enter Briskbars vegan energy bars. These sounded like the answer, plus they had some awesome reviews. I still think these are a good idea for people who like energy bars or drinks but are looking for something healthier, but turns out they weren’t to my liking.

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted to like these bars. Not only do they have just 4g of sugar, they're also vegan, GMO free, gluten free, kosher, and dairy free, not to mention a great source of protein. Plus they contained dark chocolate and coconut, two of my favorite flavors. These sounded like a much better option than energy drinks or even other energy bars on the market.

Alas, the taste sunk these for me. I couldn't stand the taste. I can't even describe what this tasted like to me except to say it is something I would never want to put into my body. Maybe it's the guarana, I don't know. And yes, I knew that these weren't supposed to be as sweet as other energy bars, but there's not enough sugar in the world to make these taste better for me. I could barely taste the chocolate, which is the only thing that made these even slightly palatable for me.

Even with the taste, I ate an entire bar because I wanted to see if I would at least get the energy (or the focus and clarity others have apparently reported feeling) promised. I did have a bit more energy and feel a bit more focused after eating the bar, so it did work on that level (which is why this is a 2 star instead of a 1 star review). This benefit is not worth putting up with the taste though, so I'll be giving my remaining bars off to someone who might actually like them because these just weren't for me.

Wellness Wednesday - Sprouts Cold Remedy Review

Sprouts Cold Remedy is a blend of herbs containing anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that help the body resist and kill unwanted foreign substances which prevents the virus from attacking cells. It boosts the immune system and keeps the virus from multiplying. In addition, it helps to loosen and expel phlegm from the lungs; and stimulates circulation and reduces inflammation. For those seeking sore throat remedies, this remedy has been proven to accelerate a healing effect and to alleviate the soreness and irritation within hours.

My Review:
4 stars

This worked well for me. I loved that it not only helped clear up my cold quickly and efficiently, but that it was made of all natural ingredients as well. It was easy to take, though having to drink an entire glass of water was a bit much. It was also annoying to have to sit and count out 25 drops each time I took the medicine. However, because it was diluted so much, there wasn't much of a smell or taste to the medicine, which I did like. I will keep using this whenever I catch a cold, as it works well without any adverse side effects (for me at least).

My Review:
4 stars

I enjoyed using this, as it left my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. This was easy to use as the dropper made it easy to measure out the drops. It took only a few minutes out of my day to apply this, yet I noticed that it made a difference to the amount of fine lines on my face. I also liked how a majority of the ingredients are natural and/or organic. The only thing that I didn’t like was that this took a while to dry and the fact that this left my skin feeling oily for a while after applying it.

Wellness Wednesday - Steel Cuticle Pusher and Nail Cleaner Tool

I'm doing a double Wellness Wednesday post this week since I've been behind and because I miss doing them. So here's post number 2.

So this year, I was finally able to kick my nail-biting habit. Because I’ve finally managed to do so, I’ve gotten very particular about taking care of my nails. And that starts with finding the right tools to do so, such as the Majestic Bombay cuticle pusher and nail cleaner.

This stainless steel manicure and pedicure tool combines our famous Pushy cuticle pusher at one end and with a convenient nail cleaner at the other end. Edges are buffed smooth to prevent catching the nail. Its textured body provides a secure grip.

My Review:
4 stars

This is my first time trying a product like this, so I can't compare it to other similar tools. However, I found that this was easy to use, which was a huge plus for me. It does a great job cleaning under my nails and it didn’t hurt my nails to use this, as it was the perfect size to get under my nails without damaging them, which is important since I have weak nails due to years of nail biting. The cuticle pusher was also easy to use and did a great job removing my excess cuticles without hurting my nails or nail bed. I like that this was made of stainless steel as it is long lasting and easy to clean. This is a nice nail tool that will last a long time and is a great tool for every nail kit.

PM-120 Tens Unit Electronic Pulse Massager Review

It may help to relieve pain and numbness in the following situations: stiff neck, muscle pains, numbness from some chronic condition, carpal-tunnel syndrome, muscle spasms, or may prevent muscle atrophy. Recharge the internal lithium battery to keep it powered up for massages.

-Six Auto Modes (stimulation programs) and Pause button
-10- to 60-minute timer with auto shut-off, 20-minute default setting
-Adjustable massage strength levels with gradual increase / decrease setting option

My Review:
3 stars

Since I suffer from frequent back and neck pain, I've been looking into using tens unit therapy to help with my pain. So when I was given the opportunity to use this, I jumped at it. To start with, I had to read through 5 pages of safety warnings (which is a bit intimidating since the guide is only 12 pages long). The set up was fairly simple. However, this is when I ran into my next problem.

I wish the guide had provided more information about where it was safe to use this device. All that was provided were pictures on the back of the guide. There was no explanation beyond that, which I would have liked since I wasn't sure exactly where to place them (and the photos only went so far in helping). Plus, there was no information regarding whether or not the device could be used on areas outside of those pictured. Also, though this was supposed to help with neck pain, there wasn't a picture of where on the neck these could be placed, so I didn't know if it would be safe to do so. And even when placing the pads on my shoulders, it didn’t do anything to ease my neck pain, which was a major reason why I wanted to use this.

Next, I was able to choose what settings I wanted to use. This is where I ran into my biggest issue. There was no explanation anywhere of what each mode was. I just had to go through and experiment with each one, which led to me painfully discovering that I could not stand all the modes. The last one I tried was very painful, and I still don’t know what setting it is supposed to represent. I would have liked to know more about the modes, as I feel that probably would have made a great difference in whether or not I would use each mode. I also discovered that if you use all 4 pads at the same time, you can’t change the intensity depending on where you are using the pads. I found this an issue, as I need to use a lower intensity on my lower back than I do on my upper back. So even though the device is set up to use all 4 at the same time, you can’t do so unless you are using the same intensity level for both areas.

However, I did like the fact that I could adjust how long I wanted the device to run, even being able to adjust the time while it was on. I could just add or subtract time with the push of a button, no muss, no fuss. I also liked that the device had a pause button, as I did need to move the pads around a few times during. Plus, if I needed to take a break during a longer session, I was able to.

And now, for the big question: did it work? Unfortunately, not very much. While I felt good while using the device and I did feel some temporary relief, it never lasted for more than 15 minutes or so. Even after using this constantly for almost two weeks, I still haven't noticed any change in my level of pain. So while this is nice to use just as a temporary relief, I wouldn't pay $35 for it or recommend it to those looking for serious pain relief.

The device has dual channel system allowing it to easily work on two areas at one time. Recommended by doctors, this is the best handheld tens massager on the market.

My Review:
3 stars

Since I suffer from frequent back and neck pain, I've been looking into using tens unit therapy to help with my pain. So when I was given the opportunity to use this, I jumped at it. To start with, it was fairly simple to set up, though I did have some difficulty connecting the pads to the cord leading into the device as I had to shove them in very hard to get them to fit. However, once I got it sorted out, it was easy to use. However, this is when I ran into my next problem.

While I liked the wide range of areas I could use this on, I wish the guide had provided more information about where it was safe to use this device. All that was provided information wise were pictures on a small page in the guide and on the back of the box showing where you could place the pads. There was no explanation beyond that, which I would have liked since I wasn't sure exactly where to place them (and the photos only went so far in helping). Plus, there was no information regarding whether or not the device could be used on areas outside of the ones pictured (which other devices from this company showed you could). So is it still safe to use on those areas? Also, though this was supposed to help with neck pain, there wasn't a picture of where on the neck these could be placed, so I didn't know if it would be safe to do so. This irritated me because that was a major reason why I wanted to use this.

Next, I was able to choose what settings I wanted to use. While I tried the pre-programmed settings, I found that I preferred to just choose my own settings. When I went to use the device, I noticed that there was no way to adjust the amount of time for the device to run. If you wanted to add more time after the 15 minutes was up, you needed to turn it off and then set it back up again. And since there was no way to pause the device, I had to turn it off then reset it again if I ever needed to take a break or move the pads.

I also discovered once I was done that once the batteries are put in, there is no off switch. So while the electricity can be turned off, the display can't, so that leads me to think the battery is being drained even when I'm not using the device, which seems like a big oversight on the company's part to me.

And now, for the big question: did it work? Unfortunately, not very much. While I felt good while using the device and I did feel some temporary relief in the areas where I used the tens unit, the pain relief never lasted for more than 15 minutes or so. Even after using this constantly for almost two weeks, I still haven't noticed any change in my level of pain. So while this is nice to use just as a temporary relief, I wouldn't pay $30 for it or recommend it to those looking for serious pain relief.

Wellness Wednesday - Foot Soak Review

Oleavine Multi-Purpose Foot Soak is enriched with essential oils such as tea tree oil and botanicals such as neem oil which are perfect for soothing tired, sore feet as well as soaking away fungus and embarrassing foot odor causing bacteria. Our unique blend of Epsom salt, MSM, & trace mineral rich salts from the Dead Sea and Himalayas create a world-class mineral hot springs experience for your feet, helping to soften rough calluses and provide nourishing relief.

The soak also comes with a 90-day money back guarantee, so if you aren't 100% satisfied with the foot soak, you can return it with no hassle.

My Review:
4 stars

After having surgery on my feet, I've grown used to having pain and soreness in my feet, especially after a long day of walking around campus. So when I was given the opportunity to review this, I jumped at it. And after using it, I'm sold for life. Not only did this help relieve my sore feet after a long day of walking, it also helped get rid of funky foot odors, which I loved. I was actually surprised by how effective it was at not only getting rid of the odors, but also with how good the soak smelled. I knew that it had tea tree oils in it and was supposed to smell like it, but usually when I use an item like this, the smell is either nonexistent or overpowering. This was a happy combination of the two, which made using the soak even better. While this seems a bit expensive for the amount you received, it was totally worth it to me and I would definitely continue using this in the future.

Wellness Wednesday - No Time For Stretch Marks Lotion Review

If you saw this two days ago (or just got the email with the draft version), I'm so sorry, but this post ended up going live before I actually finished it. So, this is the completed version. If you didn't see that first draft, then just pretend you didn't read this at all and continue to the next paragraph.

So here we are at another Wellness Wednesday. Now I know I haven't talked in-depth about my weight in the past. You know that I want to lose weight and get healthier, but it's a deeper issue than that. You see, I gained a drastic amount of weight from my junior year of high school into college. A lot of this was due to stress and my habit of emotional eating. I've since made changes in my life, and I'm doing a lot better now than when I was 18.

However, one of the side results of gaining so much weight in such a short amount of time was stretch marks. I've gotten to a point now in my life where I am comfortable in my skin. However, I've always wanted to try and do something about my stretch marks that didn't require drastic measures. So when I was given the chance to review Mom Of 11 Kids' No Time For Stretch Marks lotion, I was all for it, especially once I learned more about it.

No Time for Stretch Marks is formulated with seven all-natural butters and oils to nourish damaged skin and help regenerate skin cells. Our patented technology quickly repairs and diminishes the appearance of even the most stubborn stretch marks.

- Triple action formula firms, reduces, and repairs skin
- Helps promote healthy skin cells
- Hypo-allergenic and dermatologist tested
- For use on belly, arms, thighs, sides, breasts - you name it!
- No unnecessary chemicals, alcohol, parabens, steroids, phthalates, artificial fragrance, artificial dyes, mineral oil, petrolatum, soy, gluten, dairy, or potentially harmful preservatives

My Review:
4 stars

I loved using this! After using this for a month, I noticed my stretch marks diminishing. And not only did it help my stretch marks decrease, but it also smells good and makes my skin feel great. I haven't noticed an enormous difference yet, but I will definitely keep using this, as this is one of the only products I've ever tried that actually made a big difference in decreasing my stretch marks. I know the price seems a bit much, but truthfully, you don't need to use a huge amount to make this work, so it's worth it. If you're trying to diminish your stretch marks, I highly recommend giving this a try.

Oleavine Neem Oil Review

Neem oil has been used for thousands of years for its wide range of applications. Being rich in Omega 6 & 9 fatty acids makes neem oil suited for soothing skin and hair care. Neem oil helps protect, nourish, and moisturize dry and sensitive skin and is commonly used to relieve skin irritation. It also adds shine and helps tame and condition rough or frizzy hair.

Neem oil is also commonly used as a natural bug and mosquito repellent and in organic farming.

Neem oil has a very strong earthy smell that is an acquired smell for many, but is commonly mixed with other oils or added to skincare or hair care products, which help mask the smell while still providing the desired benefits.

This neem oil is carefully processed to retain active ingredients, not extracted with chemicals, and every batch is tested for quality.

My Review:
4.5 stars

I had never heard of neem oil prior to reviewing this, so I was excited to try it. This neem oil is actually a blend of two different types of neem oils, one from younger neem trees and the other from older trees. I liked this aspect of mixing the two, since then you get added benefits from both.

The only downside is the smell, but that’s apparently common for neem oil. The smell isn’t as bad when mixed in with other ingredients, such as adding this to other ingredients when making soap, so it’s manageable. I used this in combination with my lotion, which helped decrease the smell while also leaving my skin feeling soft and moisturized. You only need to use a small amount of this, which is another bonus as it lasts longer.

I’ve also started using this to help keep with my frizzy hair. I haven’t noticed a huge difference yet, but I’m going to keep using this and will update if necessary. All in all though, I thought this made a great addition to my beauty routine, and would recommend giving this a try as well if you deal with dry skin.

Wellness Wednesday - Another Omega-3 Fish Oil Review

So I keep trying new brands of fish oil, both because I’m asked to and because I’m always looking for the best supplements at the best price. Last month, I was given the opportunity to review Life & Food’s Omega-3 Supreme Fish Oil 1400mg capsules. I planned on writing about the benefit of omega-3s, but then I saw this on Life & Food’s Amazon page and had to share because they summed it up pretty well.

“Studies have shown that diets high in Omega-3 fatty acids may lower a person's health risks. Eating a diet rich in fatty acid containing fish - cold-water swimmers such as pollock, sardines and salmon - can help lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. Some studies show there is a proven link that EPA and DHA reduces inflammation from arthritis conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Other sources of Omega-3 include olive oil, walnuts and flaxseed.” (From Life & Food’s Amazon page)

Life & Food Omega-3 Supreme Advantage
- Fish Oil concentrate made from IFOS 5-star certified fish oils.
- Sourced from wild Alaskan caught Pollock and a sustainable and certified operation by MSC.
- USA manufactured and laboratory tested in FDA, GMP, NSF certified facilities.
- Molecularly distilled, clean refined and tested.
- Easy to swallow, soft gelatin capsules enteric coated for max absorption and no fish burps.
- Guaranteed to be pharmaceutical grade 75% Omega-3s

After taking these for a month, here’s what I have to say:

My Review:
3 stars

The capsules were easy to swallow, and I didn't have to deal with fishy burps or breath, which was a big relief.

However, I wasn't a fan of having to take two capsules a day to get an effective dose instead of one and I wasn't a fan of the fishy smell. The smell of omega oils doesn't usually bother me, but these did. I also noticed that I seemed to experience heartburn more frequently as well while taking these this past month, though I don't know for sure if that was due to these.

All in all, these were good omega oil supplements, but I probably won't take them again due to my reaction to taking them. However, I seem to be one of the few who had issues, so I would still recommend looking at other reviews and trying these if they sound like something you'd like.

Wellness Wednesday - Biotin

Since I’ve finally been able to kick my nail biting habit, I now have longer nails. However, years of nail biting has done its damage. My nails are thin and chip or break off easily. I wanted to do something to help repair the damage done to my nails so I started doing my research and came across biotin. Biotin, aka Vitamin B7, is primarily beneficial for your nails, hair, and skin, though there are other health benefits such as increased metabolism and controlling blood sugar levels. For more information, check out WebMD or this article from StyleCraze.

So after learning about biotin and consulting with my doctor, I decided to start using it. So when I was given the opportunity to review these, I jumped at it.

Nourish your hair, skin and nail from the inside out with Maximum Strength 10,000 MCG Biotin from 100Naturals.

100Naturals Biotin has the maximum strength 10,000 mcg PURE biotin in each capsule. One bottle has 90 vegetable capsules (a 3 month supply) that are easy to take and absorb. They are also made in the USA in FDA registered facilities that are NSF and GMP certified as well as cruelty-free.

My Review:
4 stars

These capsules were easy to swallow and didn’t have an odor, which I really enjoyed. And after taking these for a month now, I’ve already started to notice a change in my nails. My fingernails not only grow faster, but they seem to be coming in stronger than they used to. I’ve had fewer nails chip or break off and the tips of my fingernails don’t bend as much as they used to when pushed down. However, I’ve also noticed some other benefits.

For instance, I’ve noticed that my hair isn’t coming out as much when I shower or brush it as it used to. I have very thick hair, so losing some of it made sense, but now that I’m taking biotin, it’s decreased a bit.

Unfortunately, I haven’t really noticed any difference to my skin or my metabolism though, which I was hoping for. However, I’ve only been taking these for a month now, so hopefully, that will change more in the future.

My other issue with these were the price. You get a 3 month supply for about $14, which isn’t bad, but there are cheaper alternatives available. However, while the cheaper alternatives contain the same amount of biotin, they also contain calcium as calcium carbonate, which doesn’t seem like it would make that big of a difference unless you were allergic to it or had high blood calcium levels. However, that would be up to you to decide whether you wanted to pay more for pure biotin or less for a mix with calcium carbonate added in.

Overall, these definitely show promise, and I will continue taking them to see if they keep working and improving my nail health (among other things).

Wellness Wednesday - Garcinia Cambogia

Yes, I realize that today is Tuesday, not Wednesday. This was originally going to be last week's WW post. However, I ended up being asked to host two tours on Wednesday, so I decided not to post this then. I was going to push it back to this week, but when I looked back on past weeks, I realized just how bad I've been about posting for WW. So, I decided to do a double Wellness Wednesday post this week instead of postponing again.

I decided to do a post on garcinia cambogia because I've been hearing a lot about it lately. Jonah Hill credited his drastic weight loss a few years ago to using garcinia cambogia, and he's not the only one. So many celebrities and health gurus have been talking about it.

Now, I've struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. While I realize that I will never be skinny and am okay with that, I do want to be healthy. And part of being healthy is getting back in shape and losing some of my extra weight (no joke...doctor's orders). I've already started exercising more and eating healthier, but I wanted to see if using garcinia cambogia would help. I tried it in the past, but didn't really see drastic results. In fact, I couldn't even tell if the results I was getting was due to the garcinia or just due to the lifestyle changes I'd made.

Now that I had a pretty good weight loss baseline, I was ready to try again. I was given the opportunity to review Pinnacle Nutrition's 100% Pure Garcinia Cambogia. They claimed to be the most potent garcinia cambogia available, so I figured I'd give it a try. Here's their information and my review:

Lose Weight Or Your Money Back!

My Review:
2 stars

I really wanted this to work. I truly did. Unfortunately, I did not get the results I was expecting. I didn't really get any results at all actually. I took these for 2 weeks and in that time, I actually gained weight instead of losing it. I didn't notice any energy increase but I did notice that it would raise my blood pressure and heart rate, side effects I wasn't expecting. Which leads me to the fact that...

The company claims in their description that there are no side effects, but I had several that could potentially be linked to these. Along with the raised blood pressure and heart rate, I found myself feeling nauseous often while taking these. I started expecting to become nauseous while taking these, which is never a good sign. And once I stopped taking them, I noticed that I wasn't experiencing nausea anywhere near as often as I had been.

The only reason I gave this a two star instead of a one star is because I couldn't link the symptoms I was having to the garcinia. While I did notice an increase in symptoms, I continued having them after I stopped taking the garcinia. So, I don't know if the capsules were to blame or not, but I won't be using them again, and I wouldn't really recommend these. However, this is just my experience. If you look on Amazon, they've gotten lots of great reviews, so I could have just been one of the anomalies. Nevertheless, I won't be using these again nor would I recommend them.

My Review:
4 stars

Again, I brought my roommate in to help with this review. She had tried Nuphorin before, and her thoughts on MoodBliss were very similar.

For one, the ingredients and amounts are virtually the same. MoodBliss had 25mg less of 5-HTP than Nuphorin which was the only noticeable difference between the two. The two vitamins even looked virtually the same.

Even though MoodBliss had less of the 5-HTP, it still worked well in helping her when she became overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. Not to mention, she did feel a bit of an energy boost sometimes when taking the vitamins, a definite plus.

Also, since MoodBliss came in a more relaxing and peaceful looking bottle, she actually preferred using it over Nuphorin, which she thought looked too intimidating and medical. Plus, the MoodBliss is cheaper, which would make her more likely to buy it over Nuphorin in the future.

My Review:
4 stars

After having surgery on my feet, which messed with my sweat glands, I have issues with foot odor. Nothing I had tried had succeeded in getting rid of the smell for long. However, after using this soap on my feet every time I showered, I noticed that not only did the soap get rid of the odor, it helped keep it away. Not only that, but I noticed that I had fewer issues with my feet after using this soap. For that alone, I would keep using this soap.

I wasn't a huge fan of the smell, but it was okay. Now I don't know how effective this is on athlete's foot or fungal infections since I didn't experience either. My only issues with this product were the viscosity and the price. I received an email recommending using a pouf when using this product since it doesn't have any thickening products in it, making it very easy to overuse and waste the soap which I had a problem with. The price is also a bit high for such a small bottle. I think if you commonly suffer from feet problems such as athlete's foot, fungal infections, or in my case, messed up sweat glands, than the product would be worth the price. All in all though, this was a good product that I would recommend giving a try.
