Waking to Black VBT

Blurb:
He shattered my defenses, and I was fragile to begin with…

The first time I saw Adam Black, I was between the arms of a criminal, a gun to my throat and even then, I knew I was staring at the most dangerous man in the room.

Maybe it was his confident, cerulean eyes, or the sex appeal radiating from his pores like heat waves on a scorching day, but by proximity alone he made my vision blur and my heart stammer.

The day I was nearly killed in a bank hold-up, I began to live—because of him.

Now, I’m praying for the first time in years, hoping the scars of my past, the secrets I keep, don’t interfere with my future…

Excerpt:
I close my eyes and bend my knees—or at least I think I am. I’m finding it hard to breathe, and the room is spinning. I must not be moving fast enough because the next thing I know, the man with the big gun grabs me and shoves the cold tip of the barrel against my neck.

This is how it ends? A pang of regret stabs deep within my belly. I wonder who will feed my cat when I’m gone, and the pathetic nature of that last thought is sobering. I haven’t accomplished much in the last twenty-four years. My eyes begin to water, and my vision clouds.

“Hey, take it easy,” a much calmer voice calls out from behind me.

I try to focus on the deep tenor of this stranger, who to my shock is defying a man with a gun, but my senses aren’t cooperating.

Using me as a shield, my captor spins me and I get a blurry first look at my would-be hero. Through pooling tears, I see he’s dressed in an expensive black suit, a crisp white shirt, and a solid black tie. He has hair the color of dark coffee, and because he defies the order to hug the floor, I notice he’s tall. His sapphire eyes lock on mine, urging me to breathe, and for a split-second I forget I’m in the arms of a lunatic because it’s this stranger’s gaze holding me hostage.

Though his hands are in the air, like everyone else’s, he seems to be humoring the robber rather than obeying him out of fear. And while not armed, his calm demeanor is more threatening than the creep jamming a gun against my throat. It’s as if under the façade of composure something dark and dangerous lingers—the insight makes me tremble.

V.H., thanks so much for stopping by. Tell us a little about yourself.
Hello. I’m so excited to be here today. I’m a born and bred Miami girl. I spent a big portion of my childhood hanging out by the beach—I wish I had more time now to really just relax and swim. I love to read, write and paint. Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1), is my debut book and I’m stunned by the warm reception I’ve received so far from readers and bloggers. Publishing a book has been a dream of mine for a while and I’m happy I took the plunge.

How did you get started writing?
Ever since I was a little girl I was scribbling poems. Though it wasn’t until I was fifteen years old that my boyfriend (who is still a friend of mine), introduced me to an online role-playing platform. I had the opportunity to create a character in a fantasy-based setting and after interacting with other players/characters I transitioned into creating my own stories on a forum post. It was wonderful practice. Throughout the years my interests developed and I began to write romance stories for my own pleasure.

What was the inspiration for your book?
Many things honestly. I’ve been inspired by Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series, and R.K. Lilley’s In-Flight Series. I love the concept of damaged characters finding redemption and peace. I recognize that for so many happily-ever-after isn’t an easy road and I wanted to tell a story from that perspective.

Though if I’m one-hundred percent honest my own relationship with my father oddly enough inspired aspects of Evelyn Snowe, the main character of the Uninhibited Series. Evelyn’s father is in many respects my own—how I’ve always seen him, a great father who always struggled with his place in this world. Writing this book was cathartic.

I think it’s easy to travel down a dangerous road in life and I find it interesting to write about someone at that precipice and to elaborate on how they eventually find peace in who they are and their past.

What’s a genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?
I think because of all the years I spent role-playing on fantasy-based platforms, the idea of writing a fantasy-based novel is appealing. I have a bunch of ideas. Though I don’t think I could write a book that didn’t focus at least partially on romance. I love, falling in love.

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?
I read pretty much anything though non-fiction isn’t a favorite of mine. I’m also not a huge fan of horror and don’t feel capable of ever writing something compelling in such a genre. I’ll leave that type of writing to the great, Stephen King.

What are you up to now? Do you have any releases planned, or are you still writing?
I’m working on edits/rewrites of Fading to Black book two of The Uninhibited Trilogy, which is going to be release August 2018. Though the book is written I’m working on finalizing the story—I hate leaving readers hanging and I respect the fact people hate waiting on the completion of a story so I’m making sure it gets released promptly.

Alright, now for some random, fun questions. Favorite color?
I’m Cuban-American and proud of it so I’ll go with a loud color and pick RED!

Favorite movie?
Pretty Woman

Book that inspired you to become an author?
Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James and Bared to You by Sylvia Day.

You have one superpower. What is it?
The ability to heal others of sickness. I don’t want to live forever nor do I think doing so would be in the best interest of society in general but I would love to be able to heal people of mental and physical ailments. Too much suffering is going on in this world.

You can have dinner with any 3 people, dead, alive, fictitious, etc. Who are they?
My father and my paternal grandmother because I miss them so much. I mean who doesn’t want another moment with a relative who has passed? And for my totally frivolous answer, Jane Austin. She is the queen of romance. A reiteration of Mr. Darcy can be found in so many of the great book-boyfriends of the past twenty years. I would love to hang out with her and gain insight as to her perspective on life in general.

Last question: Which of your characters are you most like and how/why?
I see aspects of myself in Evelyn Snowe for sure. Since her father and my own are in essence very similar, I understand her feelings in that respect. Though truthfully, I’m a bit more outgoing than Evelyn.

That’s all from me, thanks for taking the time to stop by!
Thank you so much for having me it’s been so much fun.
XOXO
V.H. Luis

V.H. Luis is the author of the Black Series, an erotic romance trilogy that follows the love affair of Evelyn Snowe and Adam Black. Her debut book WAKING to Black, will be released in 2018, and the subsequent sequels FADING to Black, and SURRENDERING to Black, will follow shortly thereafter.

Welcome to my internet haven!
I’m a born and bred Miami Girl—and proud of it! I would wear shorts and flip-flops every day of the week if I could. Growing up in Miami, surrounded by my parent’s heritage has made me proud of my Cuban ancestry. Cafecito and a guava pastry for breakfast? Yes, please! Salsa music while I tidy the house? Of course.

If I’m not busy scribbling notes about the story pounding out of my head, I’m painting, listening to music, or spending time with the love of my life—my son. If I decide to travel, I bring the whole family (in-laws included), or at least I try to, because life is too short not to spend it with family; one of the many lessons my father taught me.

Monsterland Reanimated VBT

Blurb:
After Monsterland has imploded, the entire world is thrown into chaos. World leadership is gone, economies have collapsed, and communications are non-existent. Wyatt must go beyond the boundaries of his small town to reestablish contact with the outside world, and alert the government about a traitor-in-chief.

During his journey he discovers a new threat released from the bowels of the defunct theme park.

When an army of relentless mummies, a life-sucking ooze called The Glob, and a hybrid reanimated Behemoth rise from the depths of Monsterland, who will survive?

Excerpt:
A new, larger outline made his heart quiver with fear. It crouched in a corner, its snout covered with blood. This one was bigger, not a coyote, a wild wolf. Wait, he thought. Weren’t the gray wolves of California all but extinct?

Igor narrowed his eyes. The beast was a light reddish brown and not the silver gray of a wolf ’s pelt. A chain hung from its neck, the pendant of a werewolf ’s head dangling, emerald eyes flashing. What was it? Was it a mutant coyote? A wolf? Some weird hybrid, he wondered for a minute, his breath harsh in his ears. They watched each other soundlessly.

A hybrid then. He’d heard about them, a rare mixture of wolf and coyote. What did they call them? Coywolves …? or was it Woyotes?  He shrugged indifferently. Perhaps someone’s pet, he decided. Igor’s mirthless laugh came out like a snort.

The coywolf stood still, its ears alert, its head cocked as if it was observing him.

Igor dropped the makeshift weapon, calling out, “Eat the rest of your meal, you dumb beast.”

The animal continued to watch him, its two front paws on the remains of a zombie’s chest.

Igor wiped his forehead, waiting, his eyes coming back to search the village, confirming it was empty, except for the carrion eaters like the coyotes and vultures. He looked up, noting the circling predators waiting for him to move on.

“Interrupted your meal,” he chuckled. Just the local scavengers looking for food. That was all; the shadows revealed nothing else. Satisfied he was alone, he moved on. He had work to do.

A paper flew past him, hitting a kiosk as the wind plastered it against its surface. It flapped like a dying bird. Igor reached over, taking the fluttering paper, peering at the map of the park, the one they gave people as they entered Monsterland. A bark of laughter escaped his mouth.

He looked up at the giant monolith that was once the Werewolf River Run, its hulking shape obscuring the horizon. “You are here,” he giggled, pointing a grimy finger on the paper’s surface. He dragged his deformed body further down the pavement. The storefronts that used to be Monsterland’s Main Street yawned vacantly, the wind whistling through the narrow alley- ways. “Now, you are here,” he laughed. Shouting, he listened to the sound of his voice bouncing off the blood-splattered walls.

Unbreakable Bond Book Blast

Blurb:
Sometimes fate gets it all wrong.

Zoey Kent has lived with that fact ever since she turned eighteen and learned that the man she loved could never be hers. He’s a born shifter, a wolf, and she’s a mere human. Fate doesn’t care if on paper they’re a perfect pair. She isn’t his fated mate and she’s resigned herself to the knowledge that someday, she’ll have to watch Michael mate with another. It’s never crossed her mind that there might be someone else out there for her, that she would be the one to mate another, to choose another over everything she’s ever known or wanted.

Sometimes fate gets it all right.

Rafe Hudson left his pack behind years ago. Physically and mentally scarred from an attack that left his parents and twin dead, he walked away from his responsibilities as Alpha. He never intended to return but lone wolf or not, he can’t leave Michael open to an attack he’s learned is coming for his only brother. What he didn’t know was that going home would mean scenting his mate, the one person in the world that could make him whole again, that could give him everything he thought he’d lost. His pack, his home and his family.

But fate always has a plan.

There’s no way Michael’s brother is her future, is there? Just like there’s no way that the girl his brother has loved since they were kids, was always meant to be his, right?

Only fate knows why they were brought together but there is one thing for sure, the sparks between Zoey and Rafe are undeniable. The bond between them is unbreakable. And together… they’ll change the face of the pack forever.

Excerpt:
Zoey felt her jaw fall open. Rafe. Michael had called him Rafe again. Add in what he’d just said about the pack being his and that meant he was exactly who she’d thought he was when she got that first good look at him.

Her mind was whirling, “Michael? What’s going on? Tell me. Now. Because what my head is telling me can’t possibly be right… can it?”

Michael sighed, started to reach for her again and then must have thought better of it considering the threat hanging in the air. He swiped his hand across his jaw instead. When he met her eyes again, there was more than just concern there this time. There was also a good portion of sadness.

“Zoey, you remember my brother?”

“Rafael.” Her gaze automatically shifted back to him when Michael confirmed what she’d already put together, “Rafe.”

That flash of recognition hit her again along with something else. It had been a long time. She’d barely been a teenager the last time she saw him. He’d taken off after the accident that took his parents life and the life of his twin brother, the same accident that had made Michael Alpha of the pack.

It was the something else that distracted her though, the thing that definitely hadn’t been there when she’d known him before. The instant attraction to him was new. So was the urge to move towards him, to let him protect her, the belief that he was the one offering safety, comfort and home. None of that had been there when she’d known him before… before she’d turned eighteen, she realized.

Her head was still trying to figure out what that meant, how that was possible, when Michael’s next words confirmed what her heart had been trying to tell her all day.

This was the important part. The impossible part. The part she never could have seen coming because it changed everything.

“He thinks you’re his mate.”

Excerpt:
Jenny had wanted to get as far away from her suburban mansion as possible. Her Aunt Becca or Star had come to the rescue. Star was the oddball in the family, living on a little known island somewhere off the coast of Virginia. She had hitchhiked her way across the country in the 1970s and come upon this small town she called her own piece of paradise. The salt marshes and ocean had captured her heart and Star had stayed on. The scenic village offered the perfect inspiration for her art. Then she fell in love with a local. Pelican Cove became her home. She had called Jennifer and ordered her to come visit.

“You get over here, young lady,” Star had thundered on the phone. “We’ll put you right in no time.”

All Jenny knew about Pelican Cove was that it was quiet and isolated. Nothing much happened there according to her aunt. It sounded like the perfect place to lick her wounds.

Sonnet Coupled Review Tour

Blurb:
Sheltered and cosseted, Sonnet Mendoza abided by her papi’s wishes her whole life: no boys, studies first and always. Now an ER nurse in a busy Chicago hospital, medical school is so close Sonnet can taste it. Just like her father always wanted. Just like she can taste all the things she wants—like Griffith Parker, the man of her dreams and her new housemate.

Working “graves” in a large hospital as a security guard while attending the police academy during the day doesn’t leave ex-Marine Griffith Parker any personal time, but after meeting the beautiful Sonnet Mendoza, business as usual is anything but. Sassy, smart…and interested in him, too? Except, she’s made an art of keeping her distance, and she’s been clear that her plans don’t include him. But the heart wants what the heart wants. His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.

Excerpt:
It had grown dark, and the lampposts in the parking lot were lit. She had a little pep in her step as she walked to the ER doors, but she stopped and didn’t go in. He was there, hands on his duty belt as he talked with a patient near the security desk. Griffith emitted shock waves of sex appeal, even from where she stood.

Oh, hell no.

She’d never be able to walk past him after what she’d done the other night. She reddened. Not like he would even know about her stupid fantasies, but she would. She’d half forgotten he would be on graves with her, too wrapped up in the exhilaration of getting into medical school and…other activities.

Evasive maneuvering seemed the best way to go, so she sidestepped and made her way around to the back employee entrance leading into the ER. She smiled to herself over the minor victory, and pushed against the handle to go in, but it didn’t budge.

“You’ve uh, got to pull it.”

She turned around, and there he stood, dangling a black Maglite in his hand. She reigned in the growl that wanted to surface. “I’m sorry?”

“The door. You need to yank the handle toward you, not push it. There’s a sign.”

Sonnet froze, and eyed the PULL sticker she’d been oblivious to, right above said handle.

“Of course,” she murmured. “Figures.” Even though he must think her an imbecile, she raised her chin with defiance and muttered her thanks as she tugged on the door. It didn’t move.

“Use your badge,” he said. “It’s a security measure so no unauthorized personnel get in.” She glanced at him. He crossed his arms, and his lips fought a losing battle to twitch upward.

Sonnet shook her head, flustered, and rooted around her purse for her work badge. “Look, I realize you think I’m a total moron here, but it’s my first night on the floor, my car had trouble starting earlier, and my nerves are all shot to hell. So, I’d appreciate it if you, your ridiculously stacked chest, and all your muscles wouldn’t judge me, okay? I’m nervous enough as it is. We’re not all perfect.” She held her badge to the RFID reader. The second the green light went on, he beat her to the handle and held the door open for her.

She didn’t see a wedding ring on his left hand. Hmm.

He smirked. “Good to know you like my muscles.” He raised his eyebrows as she clipped past him.

“Shut it, Rambo.”

His Wicked Love Book Blast

Blurb:
Mason Stewart is in a pickle. He and his brother are the co-owners of the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort. Their dream stands at the precipice of utter ruin because their previous chef embezzled every last dime of savings they had for the lodge. In a last ditch effort to save his business from the brink of annihilation, Mason hires a new chef for their restaurant; sight unseen.

Nothing can prepare him for Emily, the red-haired siren who waltzes into his resort, carting a set of chef knives and demanding to see her new kitchen. She challenges his authority. She inflames his every wicked desire. She is everything he has ever wanted. And he can’t touch her. He’s her boss. And it would be wrong to give in to the incendiary heat between them… wouldn’t it?

Excerpt:
Well, if those numbers didn’t just chafe his ass.

Mason checked and re-checked the account ledgers. He’d been over them more times than any sane person would, but he wanted—needed—to be certain they were correct. The loss they’d sustained three months ago had been substantial. With what was left, they’d be lucky if the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort didn’t shut its doors by Christmas.

“Are you sure about the numbers?” Cole asked.

Mason glanced across the expanse of his mahogany wooden desk at his brother. There were lines of tension in his shoulders and tanned features that were so much like their dad’s, including the dark chocolate shade of his hair that he wore past his shoulders and his brown eyes nearly the color of soot. Whereas Mason took more after their mom, with his lighter shade of brown hair and eye color—in a manly way, of course.

His gut twisted. Despair and dread seized him.

Mason detested himself for their current plight: the lodge nearly bankrupt. And it was all his fault.

Before all this, Mason had prided himself on reading other people. He’d been cocky about it. As a Dom, he’d considered his ability to size up a person to be top notch. But their last chef had proven him wrong. His arrogance had cost them. Mason hadn’t seen the fraud and deceit behind the chef’s apron before the no-good piece of trash had embezzled nearly every penny the lodge had.

He could still remember when he’d discovered the theft. The disbelief, the anger. His normal fun-loving personality had vanished overnight. The lodge, the dream their parents had conceptualized and that he and Cole had actualized, had tail-spun out of control. They had gone from having excess capital with savings to spare, to barely limping along and teetering on the brink of collapse.

In the last three months, they’d had to liquidate their investment portfolio just to keep their noses above water. But the costs of running the lodge were considerable. It took capital to make this place run.

“I’m sure. We are well and truly fucked. If we make it until Christmas and are able to pack guests in, maybe we can string things along enough to begin rebuilding,” Mason replied. But word had spread about their legal woes no matter how much damage control they’d tried to do. Without a functioning restaurant on the property, the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort had received cancellations in droves. The once prosperous getaway hemorrhaged funds daily.

“Well, with the restaurant currently closed, we’re losing a stream of revenue right there,” Cole said, telling Mason something he already knew. Still, he was glad they were both on the same page.

Frustrated, he slammed the account ledgers shut and irritably ran a hand over his face. The irritation was all self-directed. Mason couldn’t remember the last time he’d genuinely smiled. In the three months since the bottom had been yanked out of their business and a person he’d trusted had robbed them blind, there hadn’t been much reason to smile. When he observed himself in the mirror every morning, he no longer recognized the person in it. The haggard expression and grim line of his mouth. The permanent scowl and self-loathing.

Life, for Mason, had once been a bountiful banquet, and he’d never given it deeper thought than the fun to be had. Now, it was a steaming pile of horse manure. He replied, “I realize that. While you were leading the fishing expedition trip this past week, I contacted Le Cordon Bleu on the west coast for a recommendation. We need a chef running the restaurant if we have any hope of staving off further losses. I figured we need all the help we can get at this point. Not to mention, it could be a potential draw in our advertising to have a fully trained chef from such a reputable institution. As much as we adore her, Tibby can’t handle the load or full responsibility. Not that she’s not capable, but she balances her time here with her daughter’s needs. I can’t make a single mom give me more time than she’s able. Our new chef should arrive today.”
