Without Aiden NBTM

Blurb:
Is a gift of love enough to open Aiden’s heart and let Tris back in?

After the car accident that killed his parents and left his sister paralyzed, Tris is left with nothing. His family is destroyed. His reputation is shot. And all he has is the guilt of knowing it was all his fault. People in town know he’d been drinking that night, and know he should never have gotten behind the wheel. And even Aiden, the man he thought he’d be with forever, blames him too much to stay.

But Tris can’t let him just disappear. After months of loneliness and isolation, Tris brings Aiden a gift on his birthday, a hawk he’s carved from a chunk of wood they’d found in the forest during an afternoon of love. A small chink seems to open in Aiden’s heart, the first sign of forgiveness. With renewed hope, Tris takes a job renovating one of the older homes in town and tries to rebuild his life. But the townspeople have long memories, and when his sister’s condition worsens, forgiveness—and Aiden—seem to slip even further out of reach…

Excerpt:
Pulling a scrap of paper from a pocket, he studied the address he’d scribbled down, then swung a leg over his bike and pedaled away from Aiden’s home. The crisp spring air cooled his face and threaded fingers through his short hair, creating pleasant tingles down his neck. He pumped harder and raced along the side streets, ignoring the blare of a car horn as he made a quick left turn. He slowed in a quiet neighborhood and coasted to a halt at the end of the cul-de-sac.

Settling on the cushioned seat, he enjoyed the view while he caught his breath. A man he guessed to be in his early forties, shirtless now that the sun was warming, lifted cinder blocks from the back of an old flatbed truck. Most of the blocks were in a neat stack on the ground, and the man’s muscular back glistened with sweat as he picked up another one.

His arms bulged and Tris coughed to get his attention, then almost fell off his bike as the man swiveled toward him. Dark curls adorned his chiseled chest and abdomen and disappeared into the faded jeans snug on his hips. Tris smiled inwardly. The delicious body screamed ‘lady’s man’ from head to toe. What did Aiden say? Oh yeah, the gorgeous ones were always straight.

Still amused, Tris walked his bike up the cracked driveway and parked it by the detached garage. He approached the man in the yard and held out his hand, admiring the stranger’s attractive face and brown curls. “Good morning, Mr. Thompson. I’m Tris Price. We spoke on the phone earlier?”

The man’s keen hazel eyes swept over him, and Tris raised a brow. Tris’s father had designed and built furniture, and Tris was fit from years of lifting slabs of oak and cherry wood onto the bench to be cut into desired lengths. Though he couldn’t boast muscles like this six-foot hunk in front of him, he could handle anything the man might need. He stayed cool under the close inspection and tried not to let his amusement show in his eyes.

The man finally shook his hand. “Call me Andrew. Done any renovating before?”

“No, sir, but I’ve built furniture with my father and know my way around a piece of wood.”

“A ‘Price’ roll top desk came with the house. Solid oak. Superb workmanship.”

Heat rose in Tris’s face. “Thank you, sir. Dad would have appreciated that.”

Compassion stirred in the hazel eyes watching him. “I heard about the accident. I’m sorry. It can’t be easy.”

“No, sir.” Tris chewed a lip, not sure how they’d strayed onto the topic. “About the job…”

Andrew’s assessing gaze swept him again and Tris was conscious of his best jeans and sweater. “You’ll need to change… I have to pick up another load of bricks. Can you be back at three this afternoon?”

Tris let out a breath he’d been holding for three months. No one had wanted to buy Price Furniture from the son who’d caused the master craftsman’s death, no matter his skill level. No one would hire him for work. “You won’t be disappointed,” he said, unable to control the tremor in his voice.

One of the sexiest smiles he’d ever seen lifted the corner of Andrew’s mouth. “We’ll see,” he murmured and pulled another brick from the back of the truck, dismissing Tris. Tris watched him a minute, wondering if he’d just fallen in love. Then he shook his head, laughing at his folly as he collected his bike.

Dianne, thanks so much for stopping by. So, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?
Thanks so much for having me as your guest today! I'm the author of m/m erotic romance, both contemporary and fantasy, the psychological thriller, and anything else that comes to mind. Oh, and a floral designer. If I can’t be writing, at least I can create with the beauty of flowers and foliage and bring a smile to someone’s face. Currently I live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with my husband, and both my children have chosen to attend colleges close to home, for which I am forever thankful.

How did you get started writing?
I've always been a storyteller, coming up with bedtime tales for my younger brothers and sister. Then in first grade I wrote a story about a giraffe. When my teacher pinned it to the board for everyone to see, I was hooked. I loved that something I had written was being read and liked by my friends. I still love that feeling of accomplishment. The deal was cinched in seventh grade when my wonderful creative writing teacher encouraged me to enter a story in the local newspaper's writing contest. I won! And I've been writing ever since.

What was the inspiration for Without Aiden?
I love books that can make me cry with both sorrow and joy. So when I sat down to write one of my own, I wanted a hero who suffers from a situation beyond his control, but because of his love and loyalty and true nature, he wins through to his HEA. Lots of angst in this one! But an ending that makes all the tears worthwhile, or so I've been told.

What’s the one genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?
I'd have to say it's sci/fi. I love to read stories that take place in the future or on some distant world. The only thing stopping me is the science. I can tell a good romance story, but can I pull off the science part of science fiction? Make the story plausible to readers? That's a good question I'll one day find the answer to.

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?
It's not that I won't because I'm against it, I simply don't enjoy non-fiction books. I live in reality.  I read and write to escape it. I suppose erotica would be another genre I don't especially like. I need the happily ever after/for now in my stories or I'm not satisfied.

So, what are you working on right now? Got any releases planned, or still writing?
I have stories in two anthologies from Breathless Press coming out this summer. Ad-Dick-tion Vol. 3 and Down on the Farm.

Currently I'm writing a story for an anthology, Love Has no Boundaries, for the M/M Romance GoodReads Group. I've started a Free Read for Breathless Press' Birthday Bash coming this summer, and I'm also working on several contemporary romances to submit as soon as they're done.

Dianne will be awarding a $10 All Romance Ebooks Gift Card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour.

Author Info:
After growing up in California and spending the first ten years of marriage in Colorado, Dianne now live in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play.

She says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house while it pours rain outside, a fire crackles on the hearth inside, and a cup of hot coffee warms her hands which kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

My Review:
4 stars

Now I’m normally not a big fan of flashes, I hate not having answers and only seeing snippets of stories but wanting more. However, when I heard about Freaky Flashes, I knew I had to read it, and I’m glad I did. Overall, this was a very well done anthology. I couldn’t really rate such short flashes on their own, so I just rated the anthology overall, but here are my thoughts on each individual story.

Death Day Anniversary
A very interesting vampire tale, would love to see it fleshed out. The ending opened up a whole new world of possibilities

The Sum of His Parts
A spooky yet heartwarming tale. I was sitting anxiously waiting for the other shoe to fall, and man, it was a doozy. I had an inkling of what the story was reminiscent of, but the ending was slightly different than I was expecting, which was nice.

Writing is a Socially Acceptable Form of Schizophrenia
An amusing look into the author’s head. This isn’t a spooky story, it’s more of a comedy than anything, but oddly enough, it still fits into the anthology. And now I want to read all these characters’ stories.

That Special Feeling
The first m/f story in the anthology. This story confused me. I re-read it and it’s still ambiguous and vague, so I’m not really sure what happened.

Andrew Calls the Dead
A cautionary tale about voodoo, with an ironic and somewhat humorous twist ending.

Make Me a Sandwich
I can relate to how Greg was acting, becuase I’ve done the exact same thing before. Loved the ending, very spooky and funny.

Destiny
The second m/f story, and the shortest story in the anthology, yet it was well-done and perfectly matched the title.

Spin the Bottle
The final m/f story in the anthology. This was an interesting take on a classic game, though the snippet wasn’t very detailed and left me with questions about what was going on.

The Birthday
The most disturbing story in the anthology to me, yet I liked the well-deserved ending. Though the psychology fan part of me wants to see the story expanded, to know more about what made the characters into who they are etc. Plus, I really want to see what happens after the end of this story.

Strength’s Curse
One of the most brutal stories in the anthology, no HEA or HFN, the only ending promised is a pretty brutal one. Not for the faint-hearted.

Reaping Darkness
All I have to say is, Death’s never looked so sexy. I wasn’t a fan of the cheating aspect, though this could be considered dubious consent I guess.

The Fog
This was a very sexy, very spooky story that really makes you think. Would love to see this story expanded.

In the Shadows
This was the second most disturbing story in the anthology. I just want to warn you, there is a bit of bloodplay in this story, and no, it’s not vampires. The story was different, with a surprise twist ending that I didn’t see coming. I wish it had been longer, so I could find out what happened next, good or bad.

Author Interview - Havan Fellows

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Havan: Sure...um...you want the textbook answer or the "oops did I finish this tequila by myself" answer? :) Okay, how about something in between? I'm just a normal average boring annoying person...I enjoy reading and writing books in my spare time, what spare time I have because just like everyone else RL (real life) kicks my assets on a daily basis. I've been writing since I was a kiddo, but never thought I would do anything with it. Oh I daydreamed I'd be a can't-keep-my-books-on-the-shelf author, but never made any moves to be that person until two years ago. Wish me luck and let's have another shot. ;)

Where did you come up with the idea for your freaky flash?

Ideas are fickle, they come to you when they want to...not when you want them to. Let's just say I have a LOT of voices in my head and every once in a while one of them will out scream the rest...and their story becomes the next one with those two fabulous words The End on it.

How did you come up with your characters?
They find me really, no I'm not being cute or exaggerating...I mean it about the voices—you should hear how I talk to family/friends about my stories. Though I like to think all authors talk like that and no I'm not weird...hehe

Who did you show your first draft to and why?
I have a special friend that sees all my first drafts before anyone else. He is a great beta reader who isn't afraid to spank my ego and tell me how it is, but he doles out the praise when it is deserved also. I'd be kinda (read: a freaking LOT) lost without him. :)

Do you have plans to a follow up?
I'd love to elaborate on my story in Freaky Flashes...but I don't know if it would have an audience, or if it would make a good longer story. It seems to be liked for the most part as is.

What is your favourite movie?
Changes all the time...though there are a few Disney movies that when they play I have to stop everything and watch them. Um...yeah.

Where do you go to escape?
My head. Hey...if there is enough room in there for all those voices surely there is enough room for me too.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
First, I'm really not qualified to give anyone advice...scary thought there lol. But...since you asked here it is. People mention all the time that this is a cut throat business...but I have to wonder why? There are enough readers out there with diverse taste that everyone can have a piece of their dream. So don't listen to the bad negative, learn from the good negative and always stay positive.

Author Bio:
I annoy, love, respect, scare, seduce, hurt, anger, infatuate, frustrate, flatter, envy, amuse and tolerate everyone. I directly attribute this statement to the beautiful characters in my head.

Author Interview - Lee Brazil

R2R: Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm a former teacher. I have been writing m/m romance since October of 2010.

R2R: Where did you come up with the idea for your new book?
LOL. There was this meme circulating on Facebook, (When isn't there?) And it was about a serial killer in the kitchen. I laughed so hard when I saw it, that I knew I had to expand on it.

R2R: How did you come up with your characters?
I have always been a bit snide about the people in horror movies…You know, running around the wood sin their high heels and splitting up when clearly there's an axe murderer out there killing everyone who's on his own? So this guy is my horror movie tribute.

R2R: Who did you show your first draft to and why?
Well, I showed it to Havan Fellows, who is my critique partner and beta reader.

R2R: Do you have plans to a follow up?
This is a flash fiction anthology, so I'm not sure Breathless Press plans a follow up for next Halloween- if they do, then I'm certainly in!

R2R: Open your book to a random page and tell us the first paragraph…
Okay, I did more than the first paragraph because the first one was really short…so

Scrick.
Some houses creak. They groan and whisper and make strange noises in the night. That's all it is. House noises. Tree branches brushing against windows and siding.  Mice in the kitchen.
Didn't mean his heart wasn't racing and his mind wasn't tripping. His cell phone glowed on the upturned crate that served as a coffee table. He resisted the urge to pick it up and call Marco. Call anyone, fuck. Any human voice would be good right now.
That's from Make Me A Sandwich in Freaky Flashes.

R2R: What is your favorite movie?
My all-time favourite movie would have to be Big Jake with John Wayne. I love that scene where his son calls him Daddy.

R2R: What do you like to read?
I like to read gritty, hard boiled mysteries like Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch books and John Sandford's Prey Novels. Oh, and romances, m/m romances are my go to fluff.

R2R: Where do you go to escape?
I walk in the woods on our property. Its very shady and peaceful, and the dappled sunlight is entrancing.

R2R: Do you have any pets?
I have several pets. A Great Dane mix named MJ ( for the Tom Petty Song), a tabby cat named Abbey (after the Beatles album) and two new bunnies, Fluffy and Oreo.

R2R: What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Don't give up. Keep writing, keeping adding words to the page, even if it's only a few a day.

R2R: Would you recommend self-publishing or main stream publishing for first time novelists?
I'd recommend either, with the stipulation that a self-published book requires just as much attention to detail as a main stream publisher would get it. Self publishers need to remember that editing is vital, as is decent cover art.

Author Guest Post - Dianne Hartsock

Hello! I'm Dianne Hartsock, one of the authors in the Freaky Flashes Anthology. I write mostly sweet, hot m/m erotic romances, so when Breathless Press put out the call for Halloween short stories, I was intrigued. I thought it would be fun to write a few flashes with a paranormal twist to them. And I absolutely love writing flash fiction. It's a great way for me to practice writing tight, concise sentences. I do have a tendency to ramble on, but when you have to tell a whole story in 250 words or less, it cuts down on my wandering quite a bit. My stories in the anthology are right around 1000 words each, but still, every word counts in a story this short.

I tend to get my inspiration for flash fiction stories mostly from photos or music or something I see on TV.  With ANDREW CALLS THE DEAD, my first story in the anthology, I had actually thought of an old TWILIGHT ZONE episode that used to scare me as a kid. It was a story of a man who killed and buried someone, who wouldn't stay buried! I took that same creepy feeling and wrote it into the story. I did have to add a touch of humor to it, though. I mean, no one can really come back from the dead, can they?

My next story, THE BIRTHDAY, came from a picture I found on Pinterest of a stern faced man with an intense stare. Gave me the creeps! I had to write a story about him. The original flash was about him watching a young man at a dance club and thinking what a joy it would be to kill him. When I expanded it for the anthology, you get to see just how much of a creeper he really is.

And last but not least, IN THE SHADOWS came from an episode of X-FILES. Not the story itself, but just the strange, chilling belief that something like this could possibly be true… It's my first attempt at a shifter story, but of course, since it had to be something scary, it has a strange little twist of its own.

Andrew Calls the Dead
Love is powerful, but is it strong enough to raise the dead? A love affair turns deadly with Steve caught in the middle.

The Birthday
Every birthday Cyrus visits the dance clubs with a surprise for the young men. This year, the tables are turned.

In the Shadows
He waits in the shadows; silent, hungry. Careful! He might be watching you. Tonight, Bobbie finds out what it’s like to be hunted.
