Their hunt for shelter leads them down an alternate path when they find spray painted symbols directing them to a mysterious place: Refuge Inc.

Neither thought they would be drawn so close to one another in the aftermath of an unimaginable catastrophe. By working together, can they continue to survive? Or will the mystery of Refuge Inc. cause diverse expectations and lead them to decisions that further threaten their lives?

WARNING: Contains explicit male-male sexual practices, graphic language, some violence and brief descriptions of the dead.

Excerpt:
"See that dark color on the horizon?" Adam pointed to the east, suddenly looking somber.
"That's a wall of smoke, ash, dust and who knows what else, and it's coming our way."

"What? What do you mean?" A bit of panic began to stir in Elliot's stomach like a bowl of his mother's spicy and overly greasy chili. He'd thought the worst was over.

"Ever heard of impact winter?" Adam's green eyes pierced his and neither moved. "What's headed for us isn't good. We're gonna have to take shelter somewhere and fast before it blocks out all light and it gets so dark we won't be able to tell which way is up. Can't run from it either," he added, as if predicting Elliot's next question. "Been watching it for a couple hours now and it's moving pretty fast."
"What do you mean it's going to get dark?" He knew he looked like a wide-eyed idiot, but he didn't care much about his appearance at the moment.
"Let me put it this way. Once the sun sets we're not gonna see it rise for quite some time. That wall of soot headed our way is so thick it will block out the sun. It will take months, maybe years, for all the crap to fall down."

"Are you sure?" He dipped his eyebrows suspiciously. "How do you know all this?"
"When those assholes finally told us that an asteroid might hit, I went looking for info about anything to do with asteroids hitting Earth and that's what I found out. We need to find some shelter."

Elliot looked at the dark grey horizon. Indeed, the cloud of unnerving darkness grew bigger, wider, closer. His heart dropped, it sank in the pit of his stomach like a ton of concrete rubble. "We're not going to make it, huh?" He gulped, suddenly feeling defeated. Panic. "What's the point in finding shelter when we're not gonna live to see the sun again?"

Adam grabbed his hand, gave it a gentle squeeze and let it loose before Elliot realized it had happened. The friendly squeeze hadn't been part of his imagination. A look of sincerity and concern painted Adam's handsome face. "I was beginning to think the same thing and then I saw you. Like I said, two heads are better than one."

Excerpt:
When the heavy, rusted metal door to the compound closed, Adam knew it would be closed for good, trapping him and a couple hundred people underground and away from the devastation on the other side.

The word trapped came to mind only because it perfectly described the claustrophobic feeling that overwhelmed him. He’d thought he’d gotten used to being in such close quarters with so many injured and frightened people. He was wrong. For nearly a month, it never really felt like the salvation he heard on so many people’s tongues.

He made his way through a crowd of people who stood crying, praying and staring at the thick latched door as if they were attending a funeral, mourning the loss of their previous lives. For many, that was exactly what was happening. For others—the women and men in fine clothing who looked as if they harbored every necessity they could ever need—Adam was sure it was the beginning of a new life. The glass half full concept.

The skin on Adam’s arm itched under its cast, but he distracted himself by touching the cold metal door with his good hand, a silent goodbye to the hellish world beyond the barrier, a world so familiar yet altered.

A warm hand on his shoulder stole Adam’s attention. He pivoted to stare into worried brown eyes with eyelashes that fluttered uncontrollability like a small winged insect. He smirked.

"What are you doing?" Elliot glanced over his shoulder repeatedly, paranoid. "These people are gonna go nuts any minute and try to knock that door down all at once. You’re asking to be trampled. Come on."

He allowed Elliot to grab his hand and pull him to the back of the crowd and down the hall which led to Pod 4. The long metal corridor echoed with the sound of their footsteps as they made their way to the large shell shaped area at the end.

"The speakers said we’ll have to get used to our own pods and—"

"I know what the speakers said." Out of the six rooms in the pod, Elliot pulled Adam to the first room on the left and pushed the metal door open. It creaked and whined on its hinges, and echoed back through the corridor. "I’d like to know who’s behind all of these stupid messages before I start obeying them."

The Beast Within Review

A serial killer targeting gay men is on the loose. As a result four men’s lives -- Devin's and Gary's, ex lovers -- Vanni's, a gay-club habitue -- and Hollis's, the detective in charge of the 'Heartless Murders’' case -- become intertwined.

Can they stop a killer and find love in the process?

CONTENT ADVISORY: This title involves a "happily for now" conclusion.

Be warned, there are spoilers ahead.

I fell in love with this story. It made me laugh, cry, want to scream, cheer for the characters, and made me believe in true love and that love can conquer. The shocking twist near the end was unexpected and I bawled like a baby while reading it. On that note, this book was very moving and covered a lot of the aspects of love; first love (in a way), love gained, love lost, love in the faced tragedy and illness, second chances at love, and learning how to love again. This book had a little bit of everything, from a man discovering he’s gay to a man discovering his worst nightmare just came true.

I truly enjoyed this book as it’s rare for a book to make me feel so much for the characters in so few pages. 200 pages are not usually enough pages to make you go through all these emotions and feelings without some disconnect. And with 4 main characters (and a fifth at the end), several plot lines including a murder, and being that short of a story, it’d be easy to get lost or confused or disconnect with the story along the way. Yet Mr. Kendrick does an amazing job at making everything run smoothly while still keeping the story realistic and a wonderful read. And as a writer, I can understand how difficult and impressive that is. I saw the characters as real people who I could meet just walking down the street and a few even reminded me of people I knew. And contrary to popular belief, it's not easy to make your characters that life like.

The only potential downside was that the ending was a HFN,which upset me since by the end of the book, I was very emotionally involved and I wanted a HEA for my boys. And the horrible tragedy that occurs near the end was very upsetting as well, but was necessary to help make this book as powerful as it was. Other than that, the story was…indescribable. There aren’t words great enough to define this book. I’ve got to say that I don’t often give many books 5 stars and very few have ever been books that I consider deserve a higher rating. This story is one of them.

I would definitely recommend this book for everyone who wants a wonderful read. I started this book at 2 in the morning and didn’t stop till I was done, it was so capturing! If you’re looking for a good read with a plot, this one is for you and you won’t regret it. And to dear Mr. Kendrick, I hope you continue writing and giving us wonderful books such as this one. And thank you for your portrayal of the police force in a positive light. I have several cops in my family and not everyone always shows that cops are regular, chill people who have feelings and are more than just "a badge."

Keeper by Surprise NBTM Guest Post

BLURB:

Life changes forever for Keith Hanson when his parents’ will declares him guardian over his three younger siblings. His new responsibilities are challenging, but he’s even less prepared to fall in love with Lisa Carle, a social worker with a devastating secret.

Guest Post:
Thank you for hosting me today!  I’m excited to be visiting with you and your readers on my blog tour for my newest book, my contemporary romance called Keeper by Surprise.  Let’s kick off with some of Emily’s questions:

Why do you write about the things you do?

I’m one of those authors who write what I know.  I am so marred in reality, I can’t imagine writing about vampires or aliens or witches or zombies.  I write about my world.  My tagline is “Everyday life with just a touch of worst case scenario.”  It’s what I love to read and it’s what I love to write.

Do other people inspire your characters (are your characters based off people you know, etc.)?

No … I usually start out with a “what if” scenario which then blossoms into characters and a full story.  Although sometimes the very inkling of the first “what if” starts with a news story, or something that’s happened to a friend or an acquaintance.  But I’ve never based a character off a real person.

What inspired you to become a writer?

It was August of 1998.  I had two sons, age seven and three.  I found myself in a very busy and stressful day job.  A business trip to Atlanta came up, where I gave presentations on Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday.  The weekend was almost a mini-vacation!  Just me, all by myself in a luxurious hotel room, on expense account, with two heavenly days all to myself.   I used the touristy materials in my hotel room to map out a day of sightseeing, and off I went.

One of my first stops was the Margaret Mitchell House.  Margaret lived in a boarding house during about 8 of the 10 years that she was writing Gone with the Wind.  Inside her apartment, she had a picture window in her tiny living room.  A folding chair and a TV tray faced the window, a black manual typewriter sitting on the tray.  As she generated chapters, she’d put each one in a manila envelope and stack them on the shelf of the picture window.  When she wasn’t writing, she’d place a bath towel over the typewriter and the stacks of envelopes, hiding them from view.

For almost a decade, Margaret continued working on her novel.  Throughout that time, life happened:  she got a job, she got married, she broke an ankle, she had all kinds of illnesses.  She kept writing.  They’d have guests over and they’d point to the blob in the corner under the towel, “What’s that, Margaret?”  And she’d answer, “Oh nothing, it’s horrible.”  They’d press her and she’d say, “In a moment of weakness I decided to write a novel.”  She never had any faith in it.  She did it because she loved Civil War era history.

Standing in that house that day, listening to her story, inspired me.  I was just like Margaret. I’d always loved writing, I’d just never written a book.  I had ideas, I just never had time.  But guess what, Margaret didn’t have time either.  All we have is our ideas, our desire to write and our determination to make it happen.  If Margaret had decided she was too busy, look what American literary treasure we would’ve missed out on.

Something spoke to me that summer day in Atlanta.  I cancelled the rest of my sightseeing, went back to the hotel and wrote the rest of the weekend.  I wrote on the airplane on the way home, and I never stopped.  Literally, NEVER.  That manuscript I began that day turned out to be my first published novel, Whispers of the Heart.  That book made me a published author and changed my life forever.  It’s why I included in the Dedication page:  “To M.M.M.: my inspiration.”

By way of piquing your interest in Keeper by Surprise, I’d like to quote a clever reader review that was posted on Amazon (5 stars, I may add):

You think you've got troubles? Meet Keith Hanson. He's got a heap of problems and they keep getting worse. The death of his parents leaves him guardian of seven-year-old twins and a snotty teenager. Compound that with a dragon lady out to get him and it's amazing his hormones kick in at all--except the lovely Lisa Carle is not a woman to be ignored. A sweet romance with heartbreak and triumph thrown in.

I hope you’ll check it out!

Excerpt:

From a few chapters in when the heroine first catches sight of the hero:

The drone of a lawn mower floated on the hot summer evening. Lisa glanced towards the house and her breath caught in her throat. Oh. My. God.

The most gorgeous man in the world was over there, mowing the lawn.

Lisa paused in reaching for the door handle and slipped lower in her seat so she could spy on the hunk for a moment without being noticed. Was this the right house? She grabbed the paper and double-checked the address. Yes! It was.

Lisa took a deep breath to get her heart rate under control. Boy, it was beating up a storm! Like she had never seen a gorgeous guy before. Well, it had been a while.

His hair, a light chestnut brown, sported hints of blond highlights. But not intentional highlights. No way was this the type of male to sit in a salon seat, paying big bucks to get highlights chemically applied. He was clean-shaven and glistening from the heat of the evening. He wore only a pair of shorts, his chest bare as he pushed the mower back and forth across the lawn.

And wow, what a magnificent chest. Hair-free and muscular, he practically shone with physical fitness. Lisa squinted for a better view. This was a guy familiar with the inside of a gym. What kind of athlete was he? Not a body builder. He didn’t sport those obnoxious over-done muscles. His sport subtly sculpted his body. A swimmer, maybe? A gymnast? Who knew, but the guy had a perfect build. Not too scrawny, but without an ounce of fat on him; that was clear.

And his face. Straight out of GQ magazine, he had classic good looks. She imagined running her fingers along his chiseled jawline, then feathering across those luscious lips. They looked a tad bit full for a male – all the better to kiss you with, my dear!

Reclaiming the Edge Tour

Blurb:
The sexual journey of Dalton, Cade and Erin begins in Ragged Edge. You won’t want to miss the beginning of their lusty connection!

It isn’t a birthday celebration without a little pain to chase the pleasure—at least according to Dalton and Cade, the two men who stole Erin’s heart. Relationships are complicated and Erin has been retreating—both emotionally and physically—from her lovers. Pushed away for reasons they don’t understand, and determined to erode her resistance, the men devise a wicked plan. They intend to use two very special gifts and one captivating night to reclaim her submission. But Erin’s trip to subspace extracts a heart-wrenching confession that threatens to rip the triad apart forever.

Warning: Contains a well-trained, dirty-talking submissive who succumbs to the commands of her Master, custom nipple clamps, tongue wagging oral sex, a well-deserved punishment with a butt plug, men who share more than a few heart-racing kisses and a custom-made-work-of-art sex chair that shows this M/M/F triad just how powerful their passion for one another is. And that’s just chapter one.

Guest Post:
I’m the kind of author who believes reviews are for readers more so than they are for me. Sort of like how reviews about restaurants are for customers. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see that one of my books affected someone enough to take the time to write a review, be that review good or bad. They had some kind of emotion reaction and I totally appreciate the investment of time and energy writing a review takes! So what do I do about a negative review of one of my books?

The answer is simple: Nothing

An author can spend a lot of time and energy getting upset about a negative review. And let’s face it, every author has gotten a negative review. There isn’t an author on the planet who hasn’t received a negative review of some kind. The trick is learning that the energy spent fretting over a negative review can be better spent actually writing. Since I have a day job still, I have precious little time to write. That means I’ve chosen to spend my time focusing my energy on doing something I love instead.

I don’t know about other authors, but I don’t have time to go trolling the internet hunting down reviewers who found something about one of my books that they didn’t like (don’t laugh, I’ve watched it happen). Before my first book was ever published, I knew not everyone was going to identify with my characters, like the fact I wrote different genres/levels of heat, or even like my “author voice”. The beauty of being individuals is that we are all allowed to have an opinion about what we like and what we don’t.

The bottom line is also simple: You can’t make everyone happy. Make yourself happy instead.

Excerpt:
“I haven’t seen that look in your eyes in a very, very long time.” Dalton stepped out of the shadows, his fingers capturing her chin to tilt her face to accommodate for their vast height difference. His lips brushed lightly against hers. “I’ve missed it.”

His arresting gray eyes had always been something she got lost in, especially when he looked as if he could devour her at any moment. The pleasurable thought did a lazy slide low in her gut.

Licking her lips, she reminded herself why she’d come here. “You’re late.”

“Seeing you look that way was totally worth it.” Dalton smiled, his fingers skimming against her forehead as he brushed her long fall of strawberry-blonde bangs out of the way.

His warm lips pressed against her skin before he gathered her close to his body. She’d always felt so tiny in his arms, his muscular bulk nearly overwhelming. Trapped in his embrace, she’d once been so safe and secure, as if nothing could touch her because she was invincible.
